S90V exclusives?

#1

Post by Albatross »

Where are the PM2, Para 3, and Manix G10 S90V exclusives? I'm glad the Native and Manix LW have been done, the Delica was a surprise, and there was the Knifeworks Native even further back, but what about now? Besides S90V sprints and Taiwanese-made Spydercos, there aren't many options for anyone looking to get a knife in that steel. I'm confused about the lack of S90V exclusives. It seems like they sell well enough. In fact, they actually sell faster than the S90V sprints in many cases, probably because of people's handle preferences and CF is a bit more costly.

I hope to see all Golden models get the S90V exclusive treatment, as well as the Endura. I mean, KW kinda has to now, after teasing us with the Delica, right? It's great that dealers like to comission M390/204P/20CV, but those aren't the only quality stainless steels out there. The PM2 alone, has at least 5 exclusives in steels from the M390 family, in just the last 18 months. Zero S90V PM2 runs during that time.

Am I the only one here? Will the M390 bubble pop soon?

I have a Manix s90v exclusive. I think it was CF (not G10), but mine has aftermarket scales anyway.

I think there was a period of a few years where there was a lot of s90v and people got 'bored' with it. The last s90v PM2 forum knife (the one with the Spyderco logo not he scales, I think it was) hung around forever, as I recall.

They exist, on the secondary market the PM2/Para3 are in the ~300 range, and the S90V/154 w/CG Manix2 can be found for 200-220 fairly easily, and the plain s90v/CF is around 300, they are expensive, but they aren't hard to find. I've been really considering the Manix2 w/CF and S90v/154 -- I have the Native5 G10(CF) version of it and I really like it.... but there's just too many things popping up left and right ATM that it's not going to be before Christmas I'd wager.... ;) :D

The para 2 got the s90v treatment many years ago. Like 2012.

I’d gladly welcome another run of paramilitary 2’s in s90v though!

It does seem like s90v often gets paired with higher end scale materials, making the overall knife more expensive. Or it's on knives that are high end to begin with. That's what tipped the scales for me on the recent manix lw from CS. It was a chance to try out s90v at a good price. I've looked at the burl g10 and s90v/154 manixes lots of times, but the burl model is going for $300 now, and even marked down the carbon fiber one is still around $240. More than I want to spend on a manix (when I could've gotten two rex45 g10 models for close to those prices).

That about sums it up. I don't buy from the secondary market, the value just isn't there for me.

I'll take G10 or micarta every time. CF is nice and all, but it's too fancy for me to take seriously as a knife. If I can't bring myself to use a knife, it's not one I want around.

I think I kinda grew out of carbon fiber. Glass fiber like the silver twill and nishijin, however, are still interesting. S90V is a steel I like better than S110V for some reason. It does not seem to be has hard to sharpen, but it may just be me.

I'm another that's never tried S90V, mainly because of the price point any knives that have it, come with. I'm still a fan of carbon fiber, tend to like bigger blades...so TRYING for the Native Chief sprint would make sense, but I'm hesitant at that price for a knife that would be a user.

I thought a while back, we heard that all Golden models were going to get S110V treatment. I don't remember all of the details.

I think S110V and S90V are so close in performance that I would be happy with either.

I actually find a great deal of difference between s90v and s110v, in my use. I am much more likely to chip s110v when s90v rolls, and s90v seems substantially less stain resistant than s110v. I'd give a slight advantage in edge holding to s110v, but the differences in toughness (s90v) and corrosion resistance (s110v) seem quite a bit larger than the differences in edge holding.

Note that my comparison is based on Spyderco's heat treatment in s90v and s110v Manx 2's and Natives, both standard (not LW), in my normal EDC use (no real science).

I remember my first time sharpening S90V. It didn't sharpen like most other high wearing stainless steels, it felt more like a tool steel and was quite easy to get a super sticky edge on it, compared to S110V. The edge retention is great, but the sharpening characteristics are what won me over.

6 native backlocks. wow to many.
my issue with the carbon fiber thing is this, i do not like carbon fiber because of the price and color. full carbon fiber scales are expensive so spyderco tried to make it cheaper by putting one layer of carbon on a piece of g10 and lowered the price only a little. there is no way 1 layer of carbon fiber makes it much more than regular g10, no way. so the fact that spyderco still wants a premium for a single layer of carbon is too much. just get rid of it, or go back to full carbon and keep the price. if this s90v sprint were any other color, other than orange or yellow, i feel it would only cost 150 ish, not 210. not trying to start a fight over this again just my .02.
i would really like to try s90v but i cant justify 50$ or more for a single layer of carbon which i dont like anyway.
