Native 5 G10 REX 45

#1

Post by RustyIron »

A uniformed employee of the United States Government showed up at my house today.
Look what he brought!

In many respects it's very similar to the Light Weight Native 5. Heavier, of course. I'm not sure the "skeletonized liner" provides substantial benefit over the plain FRN handle of the lightweight version. For the price, maybe not, but time will tell. The G10 gives the knife a more refined look. This size knife is a little small for my hands, so it will be carried on the weekends when I'm wearing big boy clothes and not doing serious work. The edge looks nice under magnification. I'll say more after I've played with the knife a bit. As for now, soup's on; gotta roll.

I thought the g10 rex45 native was linerless... Do you have a pic showing the liners?

I thought all Natives were linerless these days?
Also, that Native seems sized just right for your hands RustyIron.

I own two LW but not a G10. I wanted to figure this out so I went to BHQ's website and noticed two versions

The rex45 g10 native is linerless. I've got one. It's the best g10 native I've had - super smooth action on this backlock. So far I think spyderco really knocked it out of the park with the new g10 rex models.

Un-Liner? Skeletonized? Stainless Steel Sandwich? I tried to figure out the proper nomenclature from the Spyderco web page, and that's the best I could do. It's the part that adds $52 to the price of the knife. If you're familiar with the knives, you know what I'm talking about. If you're not, then you don't. I'll say no more.

I woke up this morning to find this:

When I told FeistyKat she'd have to give it back, she said:

Hey, RustyIron- Where did you pick up your Native 5? eBay by any chance?

The S110V is standard production, whereas the Rex45 is a "sprint run".

The Rex45 sprint is available now, but won't be for long -- the S110V should be available any time you care to pick one up.
You can search on sprint run and learn how that game works.

Ok.

The g10 s110v has liners.
All other currently produced g10 native 5s do not have liners.
They all do have a metal backspacer.

The lightweight frn versions also do not have liners. The extra cost of g10 over frn is in line with spydercos pricing. To put it simply, while frn molds have been said to be expensive to set up, once that cost is overcome, the frn knives are cheaper to produce than their g10 counterparts. This is that $52 difference mentioned.

Im not sure what anyone is trying to say about liners. You shouldnt have any.

I've heard people swap blades btw the lightweight and g10 natives, so can you also swap blades between the linered g10 natives and the linerless ones?

Of course, I've swapped the blades between the linerless smooth G10 Cruwear and a linered G10 S35vn with no problems. Just remember to keep the lock bar with its respective blade.

Thanks! I've thought about grabbing a used linered model and blade swapping...just so I can put some terotuf scales on it! :D

That's pretty much exactly what I'd like to do! Sadly I sold my cruwear native, so I'm not sure what I'd swap in now, but surely something nice will come along.
