Caly3 Lightweight??

#1

Post by samdasnake »

I'd love to see a Caly3 LW. I actually prefer FRN to G10 and I freaking love my UKPK 110. It's the knife I choose almost every day. A caly3 LW would basically be the same knife with a lock. Would anyone else go for this?

Caly 3.5 is „in the work“ , we don´t know when it is going to be released, maybe later this year.
We don´t have any news about 3 inch version.

Caly is very interesting desing, but the 3 inch is a bit short for me, but I really like the looks of this knife.

I’d def be in. I’m a huge 3.5 fan and trying lw version would be right up my ally - especially with some good tool steel.

Has anybody heard if the 3.5" version will also be SB?

Only info we have on 3.5 is that is should have FRN (texture similar to Chaparral), non-pinned construction, made in Taichung.
Steel could be XHP (since Taichung and stuff), but not for 100 %.

Would prefer S30V to XHP for corrosion resistance but the Caly 3.5 is in my Top 5 all time knives, and I am really looking forward to the LW version. Hoping this might get the K390 treatment but if it is Taichung vs Seki it might be a stretch.

That's really exciting about the Caly 3.5 LW. A 3.5 inch blade is just a little big for my tastes as an EDC. I mean I'll DEFINITELY pick one up, but it sure would be nice to see it in a 3 inch version. I envision it in 20cv with a forest green FRN handle :)

My favorite Spyderco knife is my Caly3 in Hap40. I would love a lightweight with a 3 in blade, but am also looking forward to a 3.5 in. As long as it keeps the wire clip and comes in a more serviceable steel (anyone else in for RWL34 or SPY27!?) I will be happy.

You may already be aware but the Caly 3.5 carries a lot smaller than it should. Folded it's not much longer than the 3". I prefer 3" blades too so I understand where you're coming from.

Man I would kill for that combo.

I really like the 3" blade in the Caly platform. I'd be more excited about the 3" LW than the 3.5" LW, but both are great. I would love a colorful FRN, anything but black. Forest green would be great.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

I am so in for the all the way. Love my G10 Caly 3s, but the lw platform is such a beautiful thing. Here's hoping it comes to pass :D

For me:

Caly 3 LW: Nice!
Caly 3.5 LW: Even nicer! ;)
I appreciate a long cutting edge in my main EDC knives, and the 3.5 gives you a PM2 edge in a Delica sized package. I don´t mind carrying a larger closed knife in most occasions, but sometimes a compact folder comes in handy,
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Hey Sal,

Exciting to hear about a prototype! Do you mind explaining what SLA is?

Best,
Kenneth

Stereolithography 3D printing. Uses resin instead of filament. I've thought about getting one but my FDM printers get great quality for my needs without having to mess around with expensive resins

Thanks Sharp Guy!

That's very cool, and makes a lot of sense for this use case. I know this wouldn't be fair to Sal or Spyderco, but I'd love to be able to see the difference between a prototype and a final product for curiosity's sake.

In any case, I'm enjoying the lightweights more and more recently; my Para 3 is breaking in nicely. I'm excited for a fresh take on a classic Japanese-made Spyderco like the Caly.
