Maxamet care

Hey guys. Just bought my 2nd Spyderco knife and it’s a Para 3 in Maxamet. Do you have any advice on the care for it? I know it’s non stainless, and just wondering when do I oil it? I’m knew to the knife game but very familiar with the gun stuff. So I know the value of keeping things lubed etc... Thanks!!!

Congrats on your Maxamet!!!

Here's what I do:

A drop of either KPL or NanoOil on either side of the pivot.

EDCi rubbed in thoroughly as needed to prevent spots and discoloration

Otherwise Flitz also protects, it polishes a little, and will remove any discoloration that's started.

I use one or the other.

I also use rubbing alcohol to quickly clean gunk off the blade.

If I have any concerns about the pivot area, I'll disassemble and use the above products.

Your new knife should come with a small card in the box that has care instructions, they recommend a silicone based oil iirc? A member recommended the product below in another thread, if you’re going to cut any food with it just make sure any product you use is “food grade / food safe”

I use MicroLubrol 200 Fluid Pure Silicone Lubricant Oil PDMS 50 cst centistokes 4 oz. I get it now, delivered, for $11.95.

I use tufcloth. I wipe it down each evening when I take it out of my pocket. I live in a desert, but I've had zero issues.

I put a little Tuf-glide in the pivot area and apart from that just clean and dry the blade after use, paying particular attention to the edge area.

Every so often, or if the knife is not being carried and used, I use a light coat of mineral oil on the blade.

Question for you. What type of sharpening system did you use to create your edge? I just recieved my new PM2 Maxamet and might do something like that to my edge. Also did you find it hard to sharpen? I've heard good and bad on sharpening Maxamet.

Norton jb8 Coarse side silicon carbide bench stone.
Fine side of the above stone.
Well worn Coarse 250 grit eze-lap diamond plate.
Well worn Fine 600 grit eze-lap diamond plate.
Well worn superfine 1200 grit eze-lap diamond plate.
1 micron diamond paste, on thin solid cardboard with hard backing.

Maxamet is easy to finish or touch up the edge, but hard to grind.
There's many ways to get to the end result, this is just the one that I prefer.
There's a lot of details I've left out concerning choice of abrasives, time with each abrasive, pressure, burring, using worn diamond plates, and maxamet attributes when sharpening. If you choose a similar progression, just ask and I'll fill in the details.

Hey all been a while. Got into freehand sharpening lately. Been using a 600 diamond plate if the blade is bad. But really haven’t had to use it. Mostly just touch ups with the 1200 and then a 1 micron strop... hair whittling.

After my 1200 grit eze-lap diamond, maybe 5 minutes max. That would include 30 second intervals, wiping and checking the edge in-between.

What was before your .5 micron diamond?

It's important to completely remove the previous stones' deeper scratches before advancing to the next finer one.
