Rockjumper vs. Delica Wharncliffe

#1

Post by p_atrick »

So, do you think the Rockjumper could render the Delica Wharncliffe a thing of the past? Plenty of similarities, some differences. Are the two knives differentiated enough to merit their inclusion going forward? Obviously, I've never handled the Rockjumper, but it seems it is improvement in most ways.

Completely, with the grip shape alone.

I'll be buying it, day one.

I had the same thought when I saw the Rockjumper, but for my small hands and small pockets, I think the delica wc will still rule.

You won't catch me abandoning my wharncliffe Delica! :D I definitely plan to give the Rockjumper a try though.

Especially for those who like to swap blades, handle scales, etc., I doubt the wharncliffe Delica will be leaving anytime soon.

The RockJumper looks like a great design and should sell well. There have been so many new wharncliffes lately, I wish I could buy them all!

This was my first thought as well.

The only downside, as PIOT pointed out above, is that the handle is a first of it's kind, making swaps harder. I'd love a Rockjumper in a bright color.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

This. I also like that the lanyard hole is larger and moved so that its not through the clip.

The Delica just doesn't work for my fat fingered size XL hands. The Rockjumper looks like it might be a good fit for me. Hopefully I can handle one in person.

To me Delica Wharncliff and Rock Jumper are different enough:

- Edge length: You get 0.3 " more in the Rock Jumper, goint by the specs it offers almost the same amount of edge as a Manix 2 LW
- Blade stock: 3.00 on the Rock Jumper, 2.5 on the Delica
- Handle: The Rock Jumper handle looks a lot more handfilling and neutral, should possibly fit more hands (maybe not really tiny ones though). On the other "hand": I have L to XL hands, and love the Delica handle!
- Carry: The Rock Jumper is perhaps a wider, but certainly deeper carry
- Then there are some minor differences (boye dent vs no boye dent for example) that don´t matter to me personally at all.

But sure, if I get an ffg backlock Wharnie, now it certainly won´t be the Delica, but the Rock Jumper (only remaining Delica-advantage for me: The thinner blade stock)

/ For those who might have missed that: In another thread Sal said that they´d have a "Leaf Jumper" in the works as well (viewtopic.php?f=2&t=86534#p1418031). I reckon, that will be a Rock Jumper, but with a leaf shaped blade instead of a Wharnie... very nice! :)
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

finger bumps on the delica are in the wrong place for me, so the handle alone is more appealing on the rock jumper. i also tend to like beefy blades, so there’s that. however, neither will remove my yo2 as my edc wharncliffe.

Have we seen an actual Rock Jumper?

The picture makes me want one badly.

I really like the wharnie Delica, but the Rock Jumper has a nice handle and it is just a little longer. That length is pretty much all blade, and there is not a lot of non-edge real estate on that RJ blade. A lot of cutting power for its size, but a third of an inch honestly isn't enough to make me want one yet. I got my wharnie for about half price, but I would jump on any medium to full size non-China models for 42 bucks, as well as a number of Chinese Spydies (the Bow River is one of the best looking Spyderco fixed blades I think I've ever seen and has a nice feel in hand, for 40 bucks).

Anyway, interested, may well get one eventually but I don't expect even the things I like to make it feel that much different in use.

That's a big part of it for me as well. The Delica has such a cult following, in all models of the knife, I don't think it will be going anywhere. I too would like to try a Rockjumper sometime in the future though.

Im not sure what you mean? The RockJumper has plenty of blade material to drop on a finger for one handed closing.

I beg to differ, I think the RockJumper is going to be a big success. Once new steels and scale color/material combinations come out, I think it will sell very well.

Don't get me wrong, the Delica is very nice, but so is the "big brother"

I’m a huge Delica fan...especially the wharncliffe versions. Obviously intrigued to give the RJ a try. The one drawback for me, that’s been mentioned before is the lack of jimping behind the spydie hole. I use the Delica’s jimping for power cuts and control. If that was there I’d have already ordered the RJ.

I have XL hands and find a perfect grip with the Delica in such a small package. Here’s a few of my wharnies.
