I think our somewhat more limited goal right here, though, is to get some more Military models in the pipeline by showing management and vendors that the numbers make sense for them to pursue. (Though I'd certainly be open to other designs.)Naperville wrote: ↑Sun Apr 26, 2020 5:38 pmI've got a military in S110V. Love it. Had a special sheath made for it that opens the knife on the draw.
I'd like to see Spyderco compete with Hinderer and Cold Steel in the big folder arena. Maybe I don't understand the Spyderco Philosophy, but I'd like to see a large folder with a conventional blade, around the size of the XM-24, that uses some of these high end steels that Spyderco uses.
Yea, I'd have less money, but I'd have more knives!

I love mine. It is by far my most carried knife. It holds an edge, it is tough as nails, and even I can sharpen it. It is also one of two knives that I actually own a back up for.
Do right always. It will give you satisfaction in life.

Oh yeah!
One day we might get a steel like K390 in a Lefty Millie, and I’ll be a happy man!
Until then, this is still a great knife:
It really depends on your tastes and expectations, but I guess in summary I’d say this about 52100.
- You’ll need to give some regular care and maintenance to the steel, especially in the pivot and crevice areas to avoid corrosion. If you are already familiar with basic carbon steels this is not too difficult.
- It sharpens easily to an extremely fine edge, and is quite tough. If you don’t mind doing fairly regular touch up honing you will probably like it more. If you’re after raw wear resistance or stainlessness, or use your knife in wet environments it might not be the steel for you.
- One point I make about the low carbide steels like 52100, Superblue, V-Toku 2 etc, is they will be able to be thinned out behind the edge a lot more than higher carbide steels and still maintain good edge stability. So if you can do that you’ll be playing to the strengths of the steel.
There’s a few die hard 52100 users here, so maybe they’ll drop in soon with some remarks about the 52100 Millie specifically.
Jon Le Blanc, you out there, bro? :)

I have just the 204P and Rex45 Millies. Love ‘em, and do want a few more. My preferences do lean toward more fracture- and wear-resistant steels but Vanax would certainly get my attention.

Interesting discussion. When we first created the Military Model, besides the "mission for the design", we had thoughts of using the platform to test different steels, even back in the mid 90's.

I'm considering a 52100 military for my first one.

Hi Sal,
I think you can tell that we fully support both of those goals. Here's hoping that we can continue to make it happen.

Love my S90V Millie and most of all would love to have one in K390. After that 10V would be fun and another run of Cruwear (Micarta?) would be awesome.

K390 R.I.L. with micarta, no? Although with partial liner, not sure if that would work.

Yes.
I am a fan of tool steels, but having Spyderco´s own steel in Military sounds nice.

Personally I'd really like to see the Ranger Green G-10 in K390, to match by BBS PM2 & Para 3. But maybe this one could be Maxamet?
I'd still probably buy it just as you described though.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.
Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

One can never have too many Millies.
I'd say we focus on getting the obvious ones first (Maxamet, Spy27, LC200N and S45VN) then work our way towards K390 and the like. I'd personally love to see a RWL34 version, IIRC Spyderco used it only on the Lil'Nillakka and Mule22.

I'm with you on that one. There's a good number of past Millie sprint on ebay that I'd like, but none in Europe and I'll be damned if I'm paying an extra 20 to 30% in taxes and assorted handling to get one. And, since I want different steels in different designs, I'm in if we get a sprint in K390 or a robust but non-chippy tool steel !

I'm in. The Military is a great design, even if it ain't a backlock. I love mine and would have more if I had a compelling reason.
