Getting that Itch...

#1

Post by BLJace »

I don't need a new knife... I want one something terrible though.

I'm stuck between a few options.

The little native seems incredible to me, especially with that compression lock. The compression lock is quickly becoming my favorite fidget knife. Also... it could possibly replace my dragonfly. I usually carry that in my coin pocket and is my main user. It comes in some decent steels and it about the right size. Just not a huge fan of the wire clip.

The Yojimbo 2. What a knife am i right? I'm a manager on a warehouse floor and i can't really think of a better knife for the situations i encounter in my job. From opening letters, to breaking down heavy duty boxes. It looks about the same size as a Manix 2, the strait edge would be much better suited though.

Paramilitary 3 - I love this knife. I own both a para 2 and para 3. I've found the para 2 is a little large for most situations though. While the para 3 is comparable to a delica but could handle a little more heavy use. The para 3 i own however it's k390 steel, I love it but i live in Virginia. The area is extremely humid. I carried it on a hot humid day but noticed rust beginning to form, so it's been stashed away since.

Realistically all of these knives are within about 30 dollars of each other, and it's a tough decision. I need some people to push me in a direction and this is the right group to do it

Tell me your thoughts and opinions please!
:spyder: I used to collect a lot of knives... I still do, but i used to too. :spyder:

normally, i’d tell you to go with the first one you listed because it’s subconscious the one you want most. also, i’m considering buying a lil native right now, so i can sympathize.

however, i really think the yo2 is the coolest knife. i agree with your assessment that it would be great in your environment. plus, with that thick, heavy blade, it fidgets very well. :) you can also get it in all black now if that’s your thing.

the yo2 gets my recommendation. the manix is my favorite knife, but i often carry the yo2 instead because it’s just too cool to leave at home. fortunately, it’s also a very capable edc blade.

To be clear: I don´t actually own any of your choices myself!

That being said, here my thoughts:
From what you told us: Yo2 out of the three, I´d say. Wharncliff blade: Should be perfect for most of your warehouse tasks (and you say so yourself) and if the PM2 is "a little large" for you, at least concerning closed length the Yo 2 is between Para 3 and PM2. Sure it looks to be rather wide in profile, but I could imagine that the very narrow back end of the handle perhaps makes it actually a better carry than the PM 2 (probably easier to get your hand past the Yo2 in pocket?)

Others to consider imho:

- Of course the wharncliff Delica, for me in SE, but that´s personal preference. I think fellow forum member "Jazz" could confirm that this knife certainly CAN take enough "heavy use". I´d assume that while the thicker Para 3 blade certainly makes it stronger technically, in "small folder real life" , situations where this is a real necessity very rarely or never do actually occur

- And if you consider another Para 3: I personally would always take the Sage 5 (LW or "regular") over it. Again, based more on theoretical considerations and totally subjective, but I think the thinner stock (still thicker than a Delica though) suits a small knife a bit better and the handle should offer a bit more grip area behind the choil

Good luck! Report back which on you choose in the end, if you like! :)
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Of the 3 I'd go with the Yo2 but for boxes it isn't the best slicer unless you keep the blade shallow near the tip where it's thin. You would probably see better performance from a wharnie Delica.

If fidgeting wasn't a factor, I'd have to agree with the wharnie Delica as well. I've heard nothing but great things about that knife.

i agree with this. considering the thickness of the blade stock, the yo2 is an excellent slicer. that hole front is truly a thing of beauty, but something like a box will require you to push that transition through the material. a wharncliffe delica would slice with less resistance in that case.

i still recommend the yo2 out of your list though. it’s no slouch in slicing, especially for its thickness. and it’s just the coolest knife. it always feels to me like toshiro mifune got his katana broken in battle and, instead of discarding it, he cut it down to a small fighting folder that’s also great for edc.

even if you ended up carrying a yo2 and an actual box cutter, i don’t think you’d be disappointed.

l'll add another vote for the Yo2. They feel great in hand and are excellent slicers for the size, one of the smoothest comp locks as well. The Lil Native is great as a Cadillac version of the DF2 but mostly gets pocket time when I want something "nicer" than my HB DF2 Salt. In general the Yo2 + HB DF2 Salt is one of my favorite carry combos.

here’s a manix 2 and a yojimbo 2 together for size comparison since the op brought these two up. ignore the backspacer on the yo2.

Looks like I'm in the minority here, but the Yo 2 would be my last choice of the 3. It's a great knife, I own 2 of them and love wharncliffe blades, but it's my least favorite knife to cut cardboard. The blade thickness and hollow grind aren't ideal for heavy/thick cardboard.

Of the 3 I'd go with the lil Native or even a Native 5 (thinner blade and better blade to handle ratio IMHO than the Para 3) if you can live without the compression lock.

Lil Native has such a thick blade, as well as very small cutting edge. Two things that don't mix well for cardboard imo.

Thanks for all the great replies and opinions!

I really hadn't considered how thick the blade stock is on the Yojimbo. Or that it wasn't a full flat grind. Saw the thing and fell in love. It wouldn't be the best for box slicing as i had hoped.

The little native got a lot of votes too, seems it would serve the purpose i was looking for.

The wharncliffe delica was something i hadn't thought of. Would easily handle everything i do on a day to day basis.

I'm still stuck... and now i have 4 knives to consider over 3.

I think i'm heading towards the Yojimbo though... It seems like the lil' native would be better suited for my daily tasks. However, it would probably as i said; replace my dragonfly. Which i have zero complaints about.

You all were a lot of help. It's always good to hear from people that have handled them and used them in the same purpose you intend to. The pictures were extremely helpful as well. The comparison between the manix 2 and the Yojimbo really let me see the size of it, as i own a few manix 2s myself.

Thanks for the assistance guys. Going to think on it a couple more days. You've all given me a lot to think about and pointed out various reasons one is better than the other.
