Spyderco Caribbean with black hardware?

Postby BigHaggis13 » Wed Apr 08, 2020 11:17 am

Hey folks, first post here. I just started getting into Spyderco over the past few months, and I had a question about a Caribbean that just arrived today. I had to do a lot of searching to find one with the non serrated leaf shaped blade, but I managed to get one from a smaller online retailer. I’m a little curious about it though. I have never seen a Caribbean with black hardware. Every single one I’ve ever seen has the uncoated stainless hardware. Is this just a cqi thing like the SpydieChef? The action was a little rough out of the box so I took it down to clean everything, and it’s improved but I still can’t get it drop shut smooth without tons of blade play. I’m hoping it’s a legit knife and just needs some break in, but my brown Para3 came out of the box with zero play and it feels like it’s on bearings. I’m hoping someone who knows better than me can chime in and let me know if I should stop worrying and use it, or if I need to make some phone calls.

I think it is legit, I never saw counterfeit comp lock knife...
The date code says it was made in July last year, but I never saw Caribbean with black screws. Even the stop pin and standoffs are black.
Edit: that date code is weird. Like, if it was made this year it would make so much more sense to me. Caribbean is out of stock, because there is supposedly some CQI going on, and black hardware could be the change. But this knife should be from last year?!

But it is legit for sure

So far I've seen salt df2 and the Spydiechef get black hardware... Must be a rolling cqi change for salts. Looks cool, OP!

Wow, I like the black hardware! Someday I'll have to try one of these. As others said above, several other salt line models started coming out with black hardware, so that might be the deal with this one.

Welcome to the forum, btw!

If I recall correctly, Spyderco has said that all of their Salt models will be getting black hardware from now on as a result of CQI.

I'll have to go out and buy a few of the old Caribbeans.

The black accents look good, but then the lock tab and stuff is shiny metal. Not for me.

I don't care for DLC, but the new Yo2, with the lock tab and everything in black, is alright. My brain likes uniformity.

I'm sure it has something to do with preventing galvanic corrosion.

I'm sure, but after what I put my Caribbean through and how it looked afterwards, I don't see the need.

I'm just weird, though.

Like was said Spyderco seems to be moving salt series knives to black coated hardware.

I think its just one of their always experimenting things. The old non coated hardware seems to hold up just fine as well.

As far as dropping shut goes. The caribbean is "special". Basically you cant squeeze the handle (both sides of the handle) to any significant degree or it will stiffin up the action on the blade.

I haven't had a single issue with rust on either of mine, but I'm also not playing in the ocean. For EDC/outdoor work in all weather I think it's safe to call it rust proof even before the updated screws. I've spent days soaking wet in hot summer heat and it hasn't rusted yet. I do get why they did it though, salt water is a different animal.

From my knowledge, the Caribbean does not have the pivot bushing like the PM2 or Para 3 has. They even did a CQI on the Ikuchi and Kapara to add in a pivot bushing so they can now fall shut as well. If you really want that smooth drop-shut action, a Caribbean probably isn't the model for you. Hopefully they address this in the new CQI??

There are lots of counterfeits of the PM2 using a compression lock. I haven't seen a Caribbean counterfeit though. It's probably hard (and expensive) to fake those scales. Maybe that's why?

I definitely appreciate all the input! It’s alleviated any concerns I had about the legitimacy of the knife, that’s for sure. It’s definitely different than the Para 3 and SpydieChef, I underestimated how big it was. But I’m a fan, and I spend enough time around the water to appreciate LC200n. Just gonna keep breaking it in, I imagine it’ll smooth out quite a bit the more I use it, regardless of the pivot bushing.

Oh, never saw one, always though that comp lock is a bit too complicated for these companies to copy.....I agree on scales, these have to be nightmare to made, but Spyderco could do it.

Guys, but how about the date code? Any ideas?

The date code is weird. I wonder if something simple but silly happened, like the retailer took two out to look at them and accidentally put them back in the wrong boxes. Maybe Sal will come across this and let us know if there are other possibilities.
