Delica 4 Patina

#1

Post by bk13 »

I have a Delica 4 and was wondering what I could use to Patina It. Would apple cider vinegar work?
Thanks

Welcome to the forum! :)

Not an expert, but I think you would have a really hard time trying to patina VG10 (which I assume is the steel of your Delica)
I remember vaguely though having read once that ferric chloride would patina just about any steel (at least if it contains some carbon, so not H1 for example). Don't know if that is true.

But I'd say: If you like a nice Patina, go for a tool steel...
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

... and concerning your (VG10) Delica: Maybe you'd alternatively to a patina like a tumbled/stonewash finish?

This question has made me wonder: are there any Delicas made entirely of tool steel (unclad)? And I suppose I should add, with an uncoated blade? Of course there have been HAP40, V-Toku2, Super Blue, etc, but have there been any unclad uncoated tool steel Delicas?
My collection so far: 52100 Military (2); 52100 PM2 (2); 52100 Para3; Stretch2 V-Toku; KnifeWorks M4 PM2; BentoBox M390 PM2; BentoBox S90V Military; Police4 K390; S110V PM2; SS Delica AUS-6; Wayne Goddard Sprint VG-10
Wish list: Hundred Pacer; Sliverax; Mantra; 52100 PM2 SE; Kapara

Of the delica 4 variants I believe that the cruwear exclusive is the only unclad tool steel. There could be a possibility of a k390 version since the upcoming k390 ladybug falls in the same family

I know technically not a tool steel, but ZDP-189 isn’t clad and I believe it will take a patina as well.

What kind of steel is it?

I can tell you from personal experience that while yes you can force a patina on many steels, the apple cider vinegar route is not one I would do again. Ever. It turned my blade just a dull grey colour that looked stupid IMO. But there are heaps of other ways to go about it... post up your steel type and we can probably offer more useful suggestions... :D

Cheers,

VG10 will not patina. You might use a strong acid as Warstein suggested, but bead blast, sand blast, stone wash finishes would be more satisfying.
