Cost of Doing An Exclusive

Sal or Spydie faithful.... Myself & family own a sporting goods store that's been around for 48 years and have strongly chatted about doing a run for our 50th anniversary... All of us are knife addicts to the core and huge fans of Spyderco.

- Is the minimum order based on total cost or total pieces? If so, what are these?

- Does the order need to be paid in full upfront or is there a deposit?

- Roughly, what would the lead time be for say a Shaman or Para3 order?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Btw - Our store has a strong affiliation w/ the colors dark green & tan/light brown of the local high school... Our ideas were to do a micarta in dark green or tan w/ a 4v, 10v, k390, Hap40, rex45 or something different like a m398 or lc200n blade.

Hi Mm,

Thanx for the loyalty and the interest. You would need to speak to Hilary Arthur. She is our Sales Manager and handles exclusives.

Harthur@spyderco.com

I'll give here a "heads-up" that you will be contacting her.

Sometimes (not often) I think this site needs a "like" button.

Now that sounds like a good idea.

Having run sporting goods stores, unless all of your customers are rich, a less expensive model might sell better than a Shaman, like the mentioned Para 3.

"A lot"

-Spyderco

I can only imagine. I'm sure this sort of thing won't be made too public but I'm sure it's more than most people think.

This was always my problem selling Spydercos at the shop I worked at.

OP, I love your ideas. Micarta & Tool steel go real well together. If you wanted something a little less-expensive that everyone will want to buy, an M390 Para 3 Lightweight would be a shoe-in, and seems to be an incredible value to most people. In a dark Forest or Olive Green FRN? :-)

Very few would be sold in store, we would mostly list them on our site once we finish the upgrades to it. 75% of our revenue is all based on team/league sales, we primarily sell knives because we enjoy it lol.

I could also be convinced to buy a tool steel Shaman in green canvas micarta. :-)

You might know this already, but since I just read it, I figured I would post it here. Perhaps it will be helpful. It is a quote from Sal, in a different thread.

An Exclusive is a run of a model that is made for a particular customer, usually a distributor or dealer, that wants to be able to have a model, usually a current model, but sometimes a disco'd model, that they control sales and distribution. They'll generally select a steel, handle material and/or other specialty features like a blackened blade. We've only been making exclusives for a few years. They were able to produce as few as 600 pieces in the past, but we've recently raised the required number ordered due to the issues being discussed in this thread. These are specialty models that we cannot make and inventory for the market because of our own limits. They are able to bring out more runs of the same exact combination up to a point in time. If they do not reproduce the run within a certain amount of time, then Spyderco is able to reproduce the model if Spyderco chooses. It should be noted that this is a big gamble for a company in which to invest. They have to pay for the run in total when it's delivered, so you should appreciate their efforts.

That's hopefully the plan. Either Shaman, PM2, Manix2 or Para3... I realize the market is flooded with exclusives in these knives but the issues is risk vs reward. Would I love do to sum weird exclusive combo, who wouldn't, but it's just too much of a risk especially on a first exclusive.

Please do a Manix 2 and not another PM2 or Para3.

I can get on board with that as well! Unfortunately, the fidgeters seem to prefer the PM2/Para 3. A lot of knife enthusiast's seems to be fidgeters, as long as it's fun to play with it will sell. Takes away from better, user models. But, I totally get it from the business end. Sell what sells.

A Manix 2 in green micarta and K390, 10V, or 4V would be stellar!!!

A dark green Manix LW with K390, 10V, or 4V would be even more super fantastic! I’d like to buy two!

Idk how well tan PVD would go with dark green, but I am intrigued.
