sticky delica

#1

Post by Fakeshemp »

I bought a new Delica PE about 2 months back. Everything was fine till about a week ago. The blade has become very hard to open. I have tried cleaning out the pivot area to no success. I also tried different kinds of lubrication. Anybody out there have any suggestions?

First Welcome to the Forum and you might want to try a really hot soapy water wash. Then use compressed air if you have it and blow out the pivot area if not dry the knife off really good. Add some lubricant, I use White Lightning but only a small amount. If you put too much and it is a Teflon based lubricant it will gum up the action, I have found anyways. See if that works for ya. Take Care!

Welcome aboard the Spyderco Forums dude! Most of the lockbacks do require some 'breaking in' before they become smooth.. Some wear should solve the 'sticky' problem..

Welcome to the forum, Fakeshemp! I recommend aplying a little Militech I, and working the action. You wouldn't happen to be a Three Stooges fan, would you? RKBA!

The pivot on my Delica seems to have been gummed up. I soaked the knife in soapy hot water. Problem solved.
Alan2112, I have been using Militec on all of my knives for about three years now. Good stuff. To answer your question, I am a Stooges fan, but the name came from movie director Sam Raimi. It's a term he uses to describe actors that are stand-ins for other actors. If you watch the old Stooges films with Shemp you will see that in about three films they had another guy stand in for him a bunch after he had a heart attack.

Workshed!

I had heard that somewhere before FS. Shemp was always my favorite, I can look at the guy, and just start laughing!

Yup, the old soap and hot water trick usually works, then a drop or two of Militec works wonders.

Welcome aboard. The Delica is my very favorite knife. Used to take good care of my EDC (which is a Delica, of course), but lately all I do is some rinse in warm / cold water and seldom a drop of oil. These knives are fantastic, they virtually need no maintenance, you'll see.

I've been using the same Delica for the last three years and have felt that it's pretty "broken in". Two months ago I squirted some White Lightning bike chain lube on the pivot. Wow! Two months later, multiple washings, and the knife is still butter smooth!

send it back. I have a pe delica, my first and only spyder. Its the best, most useful knife I have ever owned, but if it was doing what you have decribed, I would not hesitate to send it back.
