The Michael Christy Way Of Sharpening

Lately I have been holding stones in my open left hand and sharpening in the manner of Michael Christy.
He essentially goes from Spine to edge.
I have discovered he is correct it recreates the edge from the factory neither biased towards the pull nor the push cut but even each way.
Look at his videos and learn as I have, Maxamet on Shapton Glass stones using his method results in great satisfaction.

If I understand what you’re describing this sounds like it will raise a burr which is counterproductive.

He knows what he is doing and he is one of the few Youtubers I enjoy watching.
I also sharpen with a stone in my hand. As a kid I was taught that way. I would sit in a recliner and sharpen while watching TV.
Unlike him I don’t usually keep my grind lines straight. I was taught to have them angle towards you since you usually draw a knife towards you while you cut. I don’t know which is better but I have just always done it that way.

I just received my DMT DiaSharp extra coarse/coarse stone with the base and plan on using it the same way. I've been doing the same with my Sharpmaker stones the past year now as well. Better results in hand than using the Sharpmaker base itself. Muscle memory is real folks!
If I do well with this DMT stone, I will certainly invest in other grits.

I have watched everything he's put up on his YouTube channel at least twice, several of them a half dozen times or more -- he is exceedingly good at what he does for sure.

ive done this myself - i got the 6" diasharps and the spydy bench stones and use them all in hand - ive to get to stropping next especially as ive just got some convex edges

Came across one of his videos exactly 3 years ago, and started using his freehanding method with the Spyderco tri-angle stones.
Responsible for ditching my guided system - probably used it 5 times total :mad: On the other hand, I don't have to deal with the setup, adjustment, cleanup. Just pull out a stone.

Agreed on all points, say Sal are we not past due for a new sharpening video from you?
It was your now very dated but still valid, video online that made me first buy a Sharpmaker then a PM2.
I would love to see you showing us all how to use the Sharpmaker with the regular white and brown and Diamond and CBN rods, the golden stone the gauntlet and the what is it called rods for kitchen knives coming out.
One of the things I liked about the old video was how sincere you were and how nice you came across, I thought ya know I can trust this guy I will buy his products.

I decided to put my own edge on it. I started with a _____, worked up to the _____, and eventually finished by stropping with diamond spray on basswood in 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 and 1 micron.
I tested it on some cardboard, wood and ____. After testing I touched up the edge.
It whittles hair excellently as you can see here and I'm very pleased with the results."
The above is not meant at all to be anything other than a laugh. I enjoy Michael Christy's reports as much as anyone and only wish I had his sharpening talent. (Or Shawn's, while we're at it.)

I'm not planning any videos. The sharpening Video is at least 20 years old. I think future videos would be made by Eric, Mike J. or ? I thought to do a video on the new "Swicks", just because I'd like to arm the women of the world, but it will probably be done by Mike. Especially since it's a Warnie because of Mike.

His videos are the same reason I started free hand sharpening with the sharpmaker rods. Def a very talented sharpener

I need a less agile, technical method than his. I admire what he does, but I know I’m way too klutzy to emulate it.
