TeroTuf!
TeroTuf!
My latest obsession...TeroTuf scales. They feel just as soft and grippy as micarta, but are supposed to be more durable and much easier and safer to machine. In my limited experience, they don't seem to patina/absorb oils quite as quickly as micarta. Mine are from Fireside, and are excellent. Solid, great finishing and contouring. Another bonus: Fireside at least is offering them in lots of colors, both your old standards and new unique colors like the seafoam and maroon pictured below. I have a feeling that company is going to cost me a lot of money, and I can't wait to see if they eventually offer grooved or other raised texture options.
Has anyone else tried Terotuf scales? What do you think?

Re: TeroTuf!
I've got some terotuf on my ikuchi. What i like best about it is that while micarta eventually polishes up to a harder finish, terotuf stays fabric-like and especially grippy.

Looks good Julia!! I did that Shaman, the contrast in color and finish of the materials looks great!

Re: TeroTuf!
Well, Julia now I'm going to have to order some and try it out on some MuleTeam knives. I've worked with most Micarta, G10's and Resins but that texture looks quite appealing to me, and would make a nice summer project.

Dig those scales, man! Those look amazing. What are they made of, again?

Re: TeroTuf!
I'm very happy with the set of Desert Tan TeroTuf scales I got from Fireside for my Para 3 Rex45. That pic was taken in fairly bright morning sun light.
Yesterday I received a set for one of my Native 5s. I haven't had time to install them yet but I did hit them with a little mineral oil to darken them a bit. The oil had just been applied to the scale on the right. The color will end up being somewhere in between the the two in the pic.
I'll probably get a set for one of my Delicas next

Love the look of these, but not a huge fan of the seafoam green color that I always seem to see them in. Those Native scales above look great! I'll have to look into them some more and find the colors that I like better!

Re: TeroTuf!
The seafoam color isn't for everyone, I'm sure, although if a person liked the teal dragonflies, they'd probably like this color, too. But Fireside has lots of other colors- od green, gray, tan, navy, etc. And it looks like they're planning to do yellow, orange, and others, too.

Re: TeroTuf!
I've got a set of od geen on my k390 pm2. I like the soft feel and that they don't feel like my pockets are getting shredded. 1 scale sat a little crooked on the liner by the lanyard tube at first but it has since straightened out. I'm not a fan of the faded white look they have. Maybe I'll put some mineral oil on them like Sharp Guys.

Re: TeroTuf!
I'd love to see it on your Mule Teams. Apparently it's much easier to work with than micarta, and less toxic. Curious to hear how you find it. And I didn't even think about the easter egg color combo I've got - it really is! :p :DlegOFwhat? wrote: ↑Tue Mar 10, 2020 8:26 amWell, Julia now I'm going to have to order some and try it out on some MuleTeam knives. Re: TeroTuf!
After seeing Sharp Guy's native scales, I got curious how the seafoam would look after oiling. Here's a before and after with one thin coat of mineral oil:
I like them both, but I think I like the faded look a little better.

Re: TeroTuf!
Does the mineral oil make the handle feel kind of greasy, leaving your hands a bit messy or do the scales suck it right up?

Re: TeroTuf!
I just asked them (fireside) if they offer or can make TeroTuf scales for the Stretch 1 and will ship to Europe...

Re: TeroTuf!
Looks pretty interesting. I'll probably keep checking their site and pick up some Manix 2 scales once they offer them.

I think the Chaparral really deserves this treatment. Wow, thanks for sharing this new material!
Re: TeroTuf!
No, the oil doesn't make them feel greasy/oily at all. I wipe on with a cloth, let it sit for a bit, then wipe with a clean cloth. The desert tan scales in my post above were done with mineral oil and they just feel kind of soft. Not oily at all
