From what I understand, some steels pair well with certain stainless steels, and can be heat treated for optimal performance. Are there some steels that don't pair well with stainless steels, making it difficult to heat treat? Not that I'm saying this is the issue with Spyderco's Hap40. This topic just has me curious.
It depends on the stainless steel, of course. The commonly chosen 410 has a hardening range of about 1700-1850F though I did find one datasheet that pushed that up to 1950. Assuming 1700-1850F is more optimal that would mean steels like A2 and D2 would be better choices than steels like Blue Super (1435-1525F) or Hap40 (2100-2200F).
Would there be other suitable stainless cladding steels To better match HAP40?

Personally I like the Delica wharnie in hap40 quite well. It doesn’t hold its edge as well as my M4 para3, but it sharpens very easily and is a great user. I’ve no real experience with my rex45 blades yet.

Possibly. It might be tough to find something that fits all of their desired properties (cheap, easy to roll, provides a toughness and grindability improvement, etc.).

I've been wanting to see VG-10 used as the cladding. Hehe.

whichever they make in non orange. so tired of them just being orange. just like a salt would love to try one but yellow is a horrible color. would have bought the green lc200n para 3 or manix or whatever but not yellow or orange.

I agree I can always dye the scales but orange looks like it is pretty tough to change to anything other than black.

I am not sure who replied to me about this very thing but they say it is easy to dye them various shades of purple/ burgundy if that's any better.

I happen to like the laminated steel, so HAP40 for me.

Thanks Looks like I will experiment a bit, right now have some blue grey and teal dye as well as black.

Have leftover Sapphire bee also might start with that and see how it goes but have a feeling it is going o go black.
