A Tale of Two Hawkbills
Re: A Tale of Two Hawkbills
That Matriarch my wife got me is pretty cool, but not totally practical/edc. Really enjoy the cutting power of it though... you're tempting me with this one Connor! Heck, I've paid more for pocket clips than the price of this knife haha!

Yes there really is no reason not to pick one up.
The first Byrd I ever actually handled was a Robin which I had bought for a friend (who later had it confiscated by the TSA.) At the time it didn't impress me much, but I'm glad I gave it another try. I'm tempted to buy a Cara Cara Rescue next.

Re: A Tale of Two Hawkbills
Your posts and videos are what got me interested in the byrd hawkbill, so thank you for that! :)PeaceInOurTime wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2020 12:40 amGreat to hear your thoughts on the two models! :) I've been very tempted by the Dragonfly HB.
But, I've been more than pleased with the Byrd. I did a blade swap with a titanium Meadowlark and can't complain. Mine does have a proud lock bar to the back spacer, though.
The hawkbill shape has always put me off, thinking it was only good for specialty use and terrible at everything else. IMO, after using it, that's just not the case. I can't think of any time I've wished for a different blade shape, even using it on a cutting board in the kitchen. I've been a fan of wharncliffes for a while, but the hawkbill may be my new favorite.
Thanks for sharing your experience!
I like that Titanium swap!

Thanks! Glad those videos could help :)
I was actually quite content with the FRN, but thought maybe I should try titanium for the first time (especially since the titanium models are discontinued now).

Re: A Tale of Two Hawkbills
I found the same thing with my Spyderco Merlin and Byrd Meadowlark 2 Hawkbill. I really like the more rounded serrations on the Byrd vs the Spyderco one. I recently gifted the Byrd to my neighbor so I need to get another one, and I really like EDC'ing the Merlin as a secondary knife.

I also think the Tasman’s tip plunges a tad too far down (for my liking), so I brought it up a bit, and took a little off the spine while I was at it. I’ll see if I like it more now. I might take a bit more off the spine tomorrow.
- best wishes, Jazz.

Looks good Jazz! My Byrd Hawkbill's tip has bit my fingers a few times in the last week. One of them was deep, needing quite a bit of super glue :)

My dragonfly hawkbill has bit me a few times. That tip will reach out and grab you if you aren't careful.PeaceInOurTime wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 7:55 amLooks good Jazz! My Byrd Hawkbill's tip has bit my fingers a few times in the last week. One of them was deep, needing quite a bit of super glue :)
It's a very useful shape, but requires some mental recalibration for me after carrying drop points my whole life.

Glad I'm not the only one :) I remember seeing ThePeacent with some nasty bites from his hawkbills.

At only ~$25US, it's a low risk purchase to try out a hawkbill. Glad I did!
Same here!
Re: A Tale of Two Hawkbills
I too very much miss "ThePeacent">> he was a true-blue Hawkbill fan. He also had a lot of knowledge of different Spyderco models. Another Brother across the pond that I dearly miss is MarcusH from Germany>> also a great fan of Hawkbills and older school Spyders. And I very much miss my serrated fan and pal Spydutch.Jazz wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 2:16 pmPeaceInOurTime wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 12:59 pmI remember seeing ThePeacent with some nasty bites from his hawkbills.

But "ThePeacent" should be the official Spyderco Spokesperson for all the Spyderco Hawkbill models. I also miss a couple of older Hawkbill models that have been discontinued>> the Merlin and the SUPERHAWK both should return even if it's just a Sprint Run.

Very nice look. Tempts me to do mine. I've sang the praises of the Byrd hawkbill for a long time.

Re: A Tale of Two Hawkbills
I really really want a Superhawk Sprint....just a plain G10 model would be fine....doesn’t have to be some exotic steel either. I hated that I missed out on this one years ago.
Re: A Tale of Two Hawkbills
Not a hawkbill, but I have a G-10 Byrd Robin. It's my beater EDC when I'm out and about on the property and lawn. The thing is built like a tank, solid as a rock.
