The prototype is on display at the Spyderco booth at SHOT Show in Las Vegas this week. It's getting a lot of handling and questions asked. I'm hearing positive feedback. Sal invited Howard Clark, Ed Schempp, Phil Wilson and myself to discuss Bainite heat treatment processes. That was a good conference. Enough feedback in the straight razor shaving community indicates positive interest in this razor as well. There are enough suggestions for features to make several designs to cater to personal tastes.

If k390 were used, how would you go about making it shave ready?
Would the common abrasives and procedures presently used for straight razors be adequate ?

That's a great question jpm2. Honing a razor will always be a balance of hard vs less hard, abrasion resistance and the rest of the variables. It will have to be a compromise no matter what. I'm looking forward to the Bainite blade, but this won't stop the discussion of other equally viable steels. Spyderco is one of the few companies with the kind of education and experience to shorten that learning curve.

I have a leather strop backed by a linen strop. They hang loose on the towel rack. There are numerous variations.

I would buy one on release day. I have a vintage CV Heljestrand Mk No.10 (made in the '50s maybe?) that I use now and I am very happy with, I shave every 2-3 days and it keeps a very good edge for weeks with just plain leather stropping. I would love one in some fine grained stainless steel from Spyderco, long are gone the days when just carbon steel could do it.

I have to shave my head so do it all in one with electric shaver sadly.

What kind of point will it be? I like an Irish point. Never used one, but my grandfather had one that he taught
me how with, even though I was too young.
I enjoyed watching, regardless.
This forum has got me researching(buying) straight razors now...

Most instructors of beginning razor users recommend a straight edge and a round nose as these reduce the chances of a nick. The prototype has a barber's notch, not quite either a Spanish or Irish point, and because of the very slight smile to the edge, the point is rounded slightly to reduce the chances of a nick.
The disease of steel, in all its forms, is easy to catch and impossible to cure.

I don’t want junk of course. Straight edge and round nose is a good info, but what about size (4/8,5/8,6/8,etc).
Blade steel? All I see is carbon and stainless, no specific alloys listed. What about handle material?

I started off with a Feather Artist Club. It's a great way to learn the art of shaving with a straight. But you won't learn anything about blade maintenance.

5/8, carbon steel and any handle you like the look of. At least it doesn't matter much to me in use. I use old vintage 5/8, 6/8 and 4/8 in carbon steel and they all work fine, corrosion isn't an issue. 5/8 is a slim favorite regarding size
