Straight Razor from Spyderco

Hello everyone. I'm Mike Blue. I mostly lurk here but after a discussion with Sal, I've been asked to post this subject and collect the thoughts of everyone willing to share.

Those of you who know Sal, may or may not know that he shaved with a straight razor for decades. I've made a few knives, learned a bit about steel and collected a great many friends similarly affected by the disease of steel over the years. I also shave with a straight razor.

What would you think if Spyderco added a straight razor to the product line?

Hi Mike.
It being discussed before over the years...never went anywhere.

It's going somewhere now, Stuart.

Mac, a straight razor is the world's best meditation tool for being in the moment. If you are not paying attention and relaxed, bad things can happen. Effortlessly.

I’ve never shaved with a straight razor but if Spyderco made one I would be willing to give it a shot.

I'd probably pick one up

Yup, I’d buy one if it were made with a great steel that had awesome edge retention and corrosion resistance like s110v.

My face deserves the absolute best!

Oh, it's so cool man, the thought of it. I'll bet it's a fantastic shave too. I've never had a straight razor shave before.
I should've prolly gotten one, while in NYC last Decemeber.

I'm currently sporting a beard, but what the hey; I'd buy one and maybe even use it to shave.... :D

I have negative interest in straight razors, sorry. IMO, it seems unwise to tool up for what seems like a passing trend. I could be wrong, Sal would know the market better.

I have never used a straight razor but if Spyderco made one then I would give it a try.

It's interesting. I've often thought of trying a straight razor but haven't yet. If Spyderco makes one at a cost within my means I might buy one.

I used to shave with one, and I would definitely pick one up from Spyderco even though I've worn a beard for thirty years or so. Let's see where this goes this time.

Your use of the past tense did not go unnoticed.

I like my double-edged razor. The setup is a very nice Japanese handle, Russian blades, Italian soap, and silver-tip brush. Before I'd go electric, I'd sooner trade in my Spydercos on Pakistani switchblades. Using a disposable razor is like shaving with garden shears.

With that said, I'm intrigued by the straight-razor experience, but I'm not convinced that it's better than what I currently have.

Mike...
It is good to know that you might be doing one with Sal... :)

I do think that a Spy Razor should be part of the Spyderco line... :)

I submitted one in early 2000's and it was too off the wall it seems...

I showed it here a few years ago, but the image host site went crazy...

I have a jpeg here and there, but this thread is about Mike's version anyway... :)

No straight razors for me. Spyderco or otherwise. I have a few already that I never use. I shave my face and scalp and I'm usually in a hurry so cut throat razors are out for me.

For those of you thinking about new supersteel razors be aware it will more likely be something with little to no carbide. There are stainless steels that can be used but nothing along the line of M390, S30, etc. 52100 or superblue might be the upper edge of carbide but better yet 1070 or 80. :)

I'd imagine something like AEB-L would be good for such a project

I've had a beard for decades, so it's not something I'd be interested in. But if Spyderco ever makes a cigar cutter, I'd buy that.
