Spy27 and S45vn - Question for Sal

#1

Post by aaronkb »

Hi Sal,

You weren’t kidding about the new product reveal having some exciting stuff! There are about 5 knives I need... might have to live on one meal a day for a few months.

Was just wondering, how hard will you guys be running Spy27 and S45vn?

Thanks,
Aaron

Probably too early for Sal to know yet, but here's a shameless bump.

I'd love to see s45vn make it to the Manix LW. That's my personal "mule" for evaluating new steels. :)

I think they both max out around 64. Expect a little lower than that. Maybe 61-62? We will probably have to wait and see.

I'd bet they sorted that out in testing, the question is whether or not they'll make it public or if someone will have to test it themselves.

If they run the SPY27 around 62hrc like XHP and Cruwear, it should be a fantastic steel. Fingers crossed. Got my preorder in for LW Para 3 already. I'm sure s45vn will be a solid performer as well. I'll be tempted to get a PM2.

I thought that Spyderco doesn’t release the HRC hardness stats.

Hi Aaron,

'We're still testing SPY27. II'll check on the 45.

Hi James,

We generally don't in our literature, but when afi's on the forum ask, I try to give some sort of an answer. I just don't want to get into the argument with the "experts".

Awesome, thanks Sal! I’m really looking forward to the details, and really excited to see spyderco once again pushing the envelope with new steels.

I only got into really high end knives a year or two ago, so while I love all the options you offer and I’ve heard you guys lead the industry in working with new steels, I hadn’t seen it happen yet. Watching it happen in real time is extremely exciting.

Said it in the other thread already: What I am excited about is that referring to Sal Spy27 is kind of an US version of VG10.. For me VG10 still is one of the best "real life down to earth" EDC steels and just a joy to sharpen on the Sharpmaker.
I am courious on Spydercos "take" on that steel, if one can say so.
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

I’m a big fan of VG10 on my kitchen knives, not sure how I feel about it on folding knives... I figure part of the difference may be hardness. I also imagine that spyderco’s version would be an improvement over the original, so I’m pretty intrigued.

With the addition of the cobalt (increasing attainable hardness) and the 2% vanadium, it has the ability to take a very keen edge but still out perform VG10.

I’m really excited about it.

Hi Sal,

Comparable performance to S35VN and S30V then?

That was an extremely poor attempt to make us all think you don’t get pre release samples! Haha. :D
