I look forward seeing how it stacks up to s30v.

Hi Larrin,

Bob will send a sample to you.

Great!
Very cool, indeed! Thanks Sal and Larrin. :spyder:
And stuff like this is only one of the many reasons I support this company. Whenever I need something made by spyderco, they will gladly get my money first.

Regular production used to mean "readily available" for the most part.

Now.....not so much. Look at the maxamet para 3 and paramilitary 2.
Are you sure that’s not just because they are between production runs? The Maxamet Manix LW and Native LW are readily available everywhere, the PM2 and Para 3 are likely just the more popular models and sell faster. I don’t know exactly how Spyderco’s factories work, but I know they don’t make every single model all the time. The Chaparral LW suffers from this. They’ll make a run of one model, change tooling, build another model, change tooling, do a different model for a while... point being they WILL be making more of the Maxamet stuff, its regular production. This is likely exactly how the SPY27 stuff will be. They might sell out and be OOS for a while, but they will be coming back.

Of course that’s why. That’s my point. Regular production doesn’t mean readily available.

Even though the maxamet Para 3 and PM2 are “regular production” they are treated like sprints because they are so scarce.

When they come in stock, anywhere, there is generally a thread made here and they are generally gone within the day. Every time.

Just like sprints.

I expect there will be a proprietary heat treat to go along with the new steel. I have high hopes for this! :D

Para 3 Maxamet has been available lately. GP Knives has them in stock now.

I'll probably buy a SPY27 Para 3 LW once they're available on the SFO. The novelty of a new and interesting steel, plus a handle color that I really like are very tempting.

I’ll let other people guinea pig it but I am interested in the Manix LW over the rest... Unless there’s a military of course... I’m disappointed there wasn’t a military announced in this or the s45vn

While I am interested to see how spy27 does vs s30v -- I am a bit more curious how it stacks up to supergold 2 (sg2) as I have the MassDrop Delica in SG2 and I really love the way the steel performs -- I like sg2 better than s30v for edge retention & ease of sharpening, and general 'slicey-ness', that's a standard metric these days, right?

So what is the impression regarding spy27's place in the world, how does it affect VG10 models, S30V models, even bd1(n) and 8cr13mov, ripple in the pond and all...

I agree, I’m very happy that they have the Manix LW in the new steel, and if I can’t get the Rex45 one for some reason I’m getting that one. I’ll probably get one eventually regardless.

I wonder if Spyderco would send you a piece of this steel to test?

I wonder if this will sort of feel like a stainless cruwear. Sharpens up to a nice razor edge easily. Maintains that high level of sharpness a little better than high vanadium steels like s110v and even s30v and it could address the constant complaints of burnt chippy edges from the factory with the added cobalt. Atleast to some extent. Guess all that depends on what hrc they choose.

But most likely it was chosen because itll be easy to grind and theres less of a chance of spoiling the heat treatment during machining.

It would only help with burnt edges if they chose to use the high tempering range, which would also reduce corrosion resistance. Personally I would prefer that they not use the high tempering range.

I have one of the Manix 2's in SPY27 on Preorder, should be interesting to play with and see what it will do. :)

Developed by Spyderco and Crucible, just can't pass that one up.

i dont understand if it is a sprint or something like the s110v and maxamet versions. production or sprint.
The SPY27 Para 3 LW and Manix LW are not grouped with the other knives on the “Sprint Run” page of the Reveal, and there is nothing mentioning limited/sprint run status in the descriptions of the knives, so this seems to be regular production which is awesome.

Also, the Lil’ Native is being sprinted in Rex45 along with just about every other Golden model.
Thank you and I was thinking the same thing just wanted to make sure. Yeah and I really wish they would stop doing orange. The first lil native was in rustful 4v and the second is orange. I really want m390 family or cruwear, neither in orange. Even the new spy27 with a blue handle.
