So, a stainless supersteel for those that don’t like supersteels, and an additional USP for Spyderco.

I wonder whether this will be exported to Japan to replace VG10?

i am hoping it is like going from bd1 to bd1n but i know that it is going above s35vn. highly interested but wish it came in a knife i carry like the g10 para 3 or g10 manix 2 or lil native.

i dont understand if it is a sprint or something like the s110v and maxamet versions. production or sprint.

This is something I’ve hoped for. Mainly in the Manix LW. While I’ve enjoyed my S90v CS sprint and tried to like the S110v model I never did care for BD1 and don’t like BD1N that much. Something relatively easy to sharpen and with decent edge holding appeals to me.

Mighty good that Spyderco came and made some of their own steel.Their own recipe, Kind of Like - Colonel Sanders except for secret part.

BD1N has impressed me considerably in that regard. It is ridiculously easy to sharpen but holds an edge very, very well for what it is. Far better than VG10, far better than just about any budget steel I can think of.

I was initially put off by BD1N but I love it now.

Looks good. It is lacking in “wow factor” but in use it should prove to be a pleasure to use. Also seems like it might be easier to machine and be a nice steel for the manufacturer to work with.

Looking forward to trying it out on the Para 3 LW.

I agree with you about BD1N. I found that to be a great steel, was actually the first steel I was able to wittle hairs with. I found it to lose that initial hair splitting edge fairly quick, but by no means did it go "dull" very fast.

If this behaves like one might expect, and as Larrin’s simulations predict, I’d hope this is the new standard steel. It’s positioned somewhere in between S35VN, BD1N, and VG10. Which is like a who’s who of user-friendly steel.

And I have to assume that if Crucible’s going to formulate a steel for you, you kind of have to order a lot.

It may be just what I cut with BD1N but I prefer VG-10. I'm cutting seatbelt strap, 3 ply sisal rope and a nylon tape we call mule tape that's about 3/4" of an inch across and fairly thickly braided. BD1N didn't seem to be as good as VG-10 to me but I may be wrong. I might pull the Para 3 LW out again and try it once more.

In all honesty and knowing its unlikely I'd really like a Manix 2 LW in ZDP-189. That's a steel I can easily sharpen and it rips through the above listed materials for several days between sharpening.

Anyway back on topic, I'll at least buy the Manix LW is SPY27 to put through its paces.

Regardless, I'm definitely in for this one.

Manix 2 LW is my favorite knife, and this will give me a chance to compare a bunch of blade steels. Along with this one I'll have s110v, Maxamet, BD1, XHP and BD1n to compare in the same platform.

Thanks, Larrin. Looking at the composition table it seems that SPY27 could be a tweak of S45VN, similarly as what S35VN was to S30V. It also makes sense considering costs of a new steel development. Moreover, SPY27 and S45VN are coming out in the same time...

The SPY27 Para 3 LW and Manix LW are not grouped with the other knives on the “Sprint Run” page of the Reveal, and there is nothing mentioning limited/sprint run status in the descriptions of the knives, so this seems to be regular production which is awesome.

Also, the Lil’ Native is being sprinted in Rex45 along with just about every other Golden model.

Are you sure that’s not just because they are between production runs? The Maxamet Manix LW and Native LW are readily available everywhere, the PM2 and Para 3 are likely just the more popular models and sell faster. I don’t know exactly how Spyderco’s factories work, but I know they don’t make every single model all the time. The Chaparral LW suffers from this. They’ll make a run of one model, change tooling, build another model, change tooling, do a different model for a while... point being they WILL be making more of the Maxamet stuff, its regular production. This is likely exactly how the SPY27 stuff will be. They might sell out and be OOS for a while, but they will be coming back.
