This has to be the fastest I've ever written an article. There are probably a zillion typos.

Sounds like it maybe sort of a cousin to SG2. I've been EDC'ing a Super gold Endura lately and found it to be a nice blend of properties. I'm still pining for a 62HRC Cruwear Endura but an SPY27 might be nearly as balanced.
Can't wait to see if Spyderco includes this steel in some larger models.

Not to be a debbie downer, but it seems so similar to a few other steels we've had available for some time now, I can't really hop on the hype train :confused:

It will differentiate the product from the competitors' product. I'm actually surprised all the name brand knife makers don't have a proprietary steel already and that it didn't happen some time ago. "Gotta get me some of that SPY27" ... nope Buck don't have it, nope BM don't have it, nope ZT don't have it ... and on and on and on and on ...

Finer Carbides at lower volume with higher obtainable hardness with simliar wear to SG2


More edge stability, thinner edges, easier to get a screaming sharp edge and hold that front end sharpeness better.

Looks like this is brand new. I was wondering how the steel would be. Just posted the other day about wanting a Para 33 LW in something other than BD1N.

I suspect that's exactly the goal here. I'd be surprised if they went so far as to get a proprietary steel just for a sprint run.

The two features of a knife that I most associate with a Spyderco are the hole and compression lock. The opening hole is not proprietary to Spyderco, and the patent for the compression lock will be expiring in the next two or so years. Undoubtedly there will be copycats (and Spyderco should be flattered). However, a proprietary steel will once again set the company apart from its peers.

You also have the economies of scale issue that certainly points to a widespread adoption of the steel across most of (all of?) the Golden line. No doubt, substantial time and money went into the development of this steel. Making this steel for only a limited run would mean either a money-losing venture on behalf of Spyderco (I don't see them doing that — selling products at a loss is a good way to go out of business) or selling at a high premium that would put the knife outside the realm of possibility for many users. So Spyderco's investment will pay off over the long-run when the steel gets adopted into the top sellers.

All I know is I'm excited to try this new Spydie steel out. Also like the blue handles. I carry a Manix 2 LW and Para 3 LW a lot. So I'll be in for one of each even though they kind of expensive for what they are. Now I can finally get rid of my S110V Manix 2 LW. The only reason I was keeping it was because I liked the blue handle

I might have to try out a Para 3 LW in this steel.

You hear the term "sharpener's steel" tossed around, some folks in that camp also want stainless.

SPY27 is the new "Stainless sharpener's steel". Props to Spyderco for making it happen.

Anyone know which foundry it's out of?

All CPM (Crucible Particle Metallurgy) are made by Crucible Steels USA

Yes a more stability focused stainless steel. Very bold move, I like it.

Like the rest of you, I am very interested to get this new steel in my hands and see what it can do.

Once again it is just another thing that keeps setting Spyderco apart from many other knife manufacturers. I love their dedication to using, experimenting, and now creating new and less common steels to keep us knife nuts satiated.

Blows my mind we have a Crucible Steel literally a mile away from my work here in Syracuse, NY. Would love to know which steels Spyderco uses have come from right here!

Can’t wait to get it on the stones, it looks like it might be a nice ‘sharpeners steel’, a little bit like Cruwear in that sense, although not in composition.

I'll put my tin foil hat on. Since there have been some people not buying new models because they're tired of s30v ("not s30v again..."), could this be Spyderco essentially re-branding s30v/s35vn with a slight tweak and new name to get those buyers back? Will this be the new stand-in for s30v? From a business perspective, it makes sense to me.

Well so far it's on models that used bd1n, so I'm wondering if it's intended (at least as first) to replace that. Or maybe those models have been a testing ground for new base model steels in general. But either way, I'm sure a lot has been invested in the development of this steel, so there's gotta be a plan for it.

My first thoughts before reading Larrin’s article were:

-good product differentiator for Spyderco
-looks akin to VG-10, but with added hard carbides (Vanadium and Niobium) for wear resistance
-seems like they’re going for a good balance of properties, as with S30V and VG-10
-it’ll be fun to read the early reports from users
