CPM SPY27 steel

Wow. A proprietary Spyderco steel - a CPM pm steel with vanadium, molybdenum, niobium, cobalt and nitrogen.
Any ideas or speculation as to composition and likely performance?

27 is the atomic number for Cobalt.

IMHO It could be similar to PSF27 but looks like it should have better wear resistance and corrosion resistance (i.e.stainless)...possibly higher hardness?

Im excited to try it out, but the para 3 and manix 2 dont really do anything for me. Might get it in the manix 2. Will probably wait to see what other knives they put it in. Lots of carbon and lots of chromium. Im sure it will be stainless enough.

At first glance it made me think of VG-10.
But with much higher Vanadium; increased cobalt & moly + niobium.
I’m far from an expert but when comparing it’s composition to other steels I like, this stuff is looking good!

Doesn't look anything like PSF27.
The Carbon, chromium, Vanadium, Niobium and Cobalt confirm that.
What it does look like is SG2/S35VN but we have a lot of Niobium in there. Looks like a good sharpening steel and like they are chasing a steel that takes a better edge than the S30v stuff we are used to. Looks like it can run hard. Hopefully they decide to max it out and run towards 62rc.
Not available for me to play with heat treatment but with all that Niobium and Cobalt I'd have a lot of fun pushing towards 65rc for slicers

Funny thing is when creating my username I almost used 27, as my birthday is on the 27th of May...but instead I went with my old favorite play from my college football days, which my jersey number was 83.

With Kristi saying above that the 27 in the name is in reference to Cobalt, and reading Larrin’s article on Cobalt and it’s high temperature resistance, a high hardness/HRC is the first thing it made me think of. (Also why I got to looking at VG-10’s composition and wondered if it was loosely based on that).

Yeah, from the composition it looks like it's Spyderco's proprietary improvement on S35VN. It will be interesting to see what the extra niobium (1% vs 0.5%), cobalt, and the addition of more than trace nitrogen do in terms of real-world performance.
If I had to guess, the additions should make it tougher & allow it to be run harder than S35VN, along with an increase in corrosion resistance.
