CPM SPY27 steel
Re: CPM SPY27 steel
Hi Marius, Tom,
We began with VG-10 and tweaked from there. There was nothing quite like it in the USA and we wanted to get something made here.
It was a long term project with Crucible and Spyderco over the past couple of years.
Carpenter's CTS-BD1 was similar. We worked with Carpenter for years testing and helping them develop their blade steels. We began with Gingami 1 and tweaked from there and that's how we ended up with CTS-BD1N.

Re: CPM SPY27 steel
I think it will be good all around steel. With 14% Cr and 2% Mo it kinda remind me of CPM154 ( that one has 4 % Mo) but it has more Vanadium and Cobalt.
I have one homemade knife out of RWL34 (CPM 154 analogue) and the edge I can get on that knife is very nice.
Not so much interested in Para3 or Manix, I hope for Military or something bigger

The way I see it is like a suped up VG10, or VG10 on steroids, but American made.sal wrote: ↑Wed Feb 12, 2020 9:32 amHi Marius, Tom,

I just want to say that the idea to develop a steel with Cobalt(or around Cobalt) in mind was brilliant. I love Cobalt based steels, they have something magic... I can't describe it. Let's take N690Co for example ... I see few people appreciate this steel which is an awesome alloy. My plain N690Co Urban sharpens like a dream and it's so easy to maintain at peak sharpness. I can't wait to see what SPY27 has to offer but I have a good feeling about it. Good job Sal !

Re: CPM SPY27 steel
Hey Larrin, Shawn, just to let you know it would be lovely if we had some update from your tests with SPY27.
Thanks for your support.
Re: CPM SPY27 steel
I have some hardness and toughness results. Hopefully will get them posted in the next week or two. Trying to do some corrosion testing and metallography first.

Re: CPM SPY27 steel
OK, that makes sense and explains the VG10 comparisons. But it doesn't take much tweaking to have something entirely different, and I think that is a good thing in this case. I think that calling Spy27 a "souped up VG10" is pretty apt. Just how souped up is what we are all waiting with baited breath to find out!!

Re: CPM SPY27 steel
I'm really curious how the toughness/stability will compare to the BD1N. If the results are favorable I may replace my woods folder/foraging knife (manix 2 lw).
Re: CPM SPY27 steel
I'm a huge fan of VG-10, can't wait to try this out!
This just won't do, we need them all NOW!!!

Don't be like that ! Give us the toughness at least

Re: CPM SPY27 steel
Anybody has a real world experience on how easy/hard does this steel sharpens on a spyderco knife compared to S30V?
Re: CPM SPY27 steel
SPY27 hasn't made it to consumers’ hands yet.
It does have lower carbide content than S30V, so theoretically, it should be slightly easier.
Have: old S30V Native, HAP40 Endura, ZDP DF2, S110V Manix LW, Cru-wear Para 3, SE H1 DF2, S90V Native 5, K390 Urban, SE Pac Salt, P.I.T.S., XHP Manix LW, SB Caly 3, B70P, PMA11, K03, Kapara, REX 45 Military, 154CM Manix LW, Swick, AEB-L Urban, KC Cruwear Manix, M390 PM2, Mantra 2, CruCarta Shaman, M390 Manix, K390 Police 4, S90V Manix LW, Rex 45 Manix LW, 20CV Manix, Rex 45 Lil’Native, Shaman, C208GP, Cruwear Manix, Cruwear Manix, M4 Chief, Z-max!!!

Re: CPM SPY27 steel
Since it's mentioned in the new Reveal it should be withing the 90 day range? I'm hoping sooner :D

Re: CPM SPY27 steel
Exciting stuff. I wonder what the Catra results will be like and then how that will compare with real world use?

Re: CPM SPY27 steel
Referencing sals post in this thread. They began with vg10 and tweaked it to get something like it made here in the states. So it should be very comparable to vg10, not s30v

Re: CPM SPY27 steel
SPY27 has 1% Niobium and 2% vanadium, compared with 0% and maybe 0.2%, respectively, for VG-10. There should be a noticeable difference between them, especially if they run the SPY27 hardness higher.
Re: CPM SPY27 steel
I think what a lot of folks are missing in theoretical discussions about SPY27 is that it's a particle metallurgy steel. That's almost as much a difference-maker as the tweaks to VG-10's chemistry: just think of the differences makers & users have observed between CPM-154 (a particle metallurgy steel) and 154CM (a conventionally cast steel) in wear resistance, toughness, and ease of sharpening despite having the same chemical composition. I imagine the difference in processing alone between VG-10 & SPY27 already has implications regarding strength, toughness, and ductility, even without considering the effects of the addition of cobalt and other elements in the latter.
Re: CPM SPY27 steel
We will all get to test our "baby" together.....in the real world.
Today I'm carrying a production Cobalt blue Para 3 with an SPY27 blade. I know I'm biased, but I'm also honest. This is a very impressive knife. From Eric's design, material quality, function, fit, finish, closing, lock-up and especially the "cut". Our Golden Knifemakers really showed their skill.
