That risk is probably still there since the sale would likely be handled the same as a sprint or pre-order system unless they just made X amount based on exactly how many were ordered.
I was imagining they would make the amount preordered plus some extras.

I think not, and I’ll leave it at that, because cats cannot be herded.

Yes, conditionally. If all the specs are finalized and it's something I want, but Spyderco just needs or wants a minimum of pre-paid orders to justify making the production run, then I'd be fine pre-paying.

I would absolutely pay ahead of time for a fourm knife if i knew the specs and chose to buy it. I would preferably like to see the etch design ahead of time too. I would buy either a Shaman or drop point UKPK.

I have stated my preferences for those two elsewhere.

Can we persuade :spyder: to do it? Yablanowitz provides helpful history and makes excellent points, as have others.

Would Spyderco be willing to do SFO direct sale to us if we had the money up front? If so, how could we facilitate the process, or could we accept full retail pricing?

Alternately, is there a dealer that would be willing to eat (some of) the cost of distribution?

I agree that we should do whatever simplifies distribution and customs for folks living outside the US.

Having a dealer "sponsor" the program by commissioning the exclusive would definitely make it a lot easier (lower risk) for Spyderco.

Hopefully one of our favorite Spyderco dealers is watching and feeling generous? And would be willing to do pre-orders and prioritize sales to forum members. I don't care too much about the username etching, but i do prefer an understated forum etch. The HH exclusive had a really nice etch.

Yes, if I liked the model and the execution of the logo.

I can't guarantee anything without the specifics.

I would prefer to know what the Forum Knife was (Model, and specs), but I would in fact prepay due to Spyderco's OUTSTANDING reputation. :D

I'd be happy to pay up front for any knife chosen as the next Spyderco Forum Knife. Model, materials, and cost don't enter into it for me. I have every Spyderco Forum knife offered, to date, and consider them to be display pieces and a sub-collection within my collection, so my normal prejudices vis-a-vis locks, steels, and handle materials don't apply.

+1 Not picky as it might be something outside my Square I might enjoy.

It would be cool if they did a forum knife similar to how they did the Bug pendants but that was a much simpler (and less expensive/less risky) item to manufacture.
+1 this would work for me also.

As with my last post, I'd question the necessity of even discussing prepaid forum knives. We tend to over dream and over suggest when it comes to a forum knife. Did Sal indicate there was any need for this prepayment talk? Maybe I missed something. I'd let the Spyderco crew figure out the business end of this.

Our creative input is probably best aimed at making budget friendly suggestions of a moderate sized, Golden produced blade that the biggest possible forum audience can own.

I'd suggest a Para 3 or Lil Native. It's not as sexy as inlaid pearl glow in the dark scales, s9000v blade with bedazzled titanium liners, but I bet they would sell more easily.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

Having been a business owner for many years I have to speculate on his moves towards moving on something like this. I''m going to say, "no chance".

I agree, this discussion seems a bit silly since Spyderco hasn't indicated any reluctance to making a forum knife based on financials. All they've said is that it's difficult to squeeze in a small production run and that the Golden plant would have the best chance of doing so.

The only reason I can see for upfront payment would be to make sure everyone who wants one gets one.

There’s not any need for prepayment I wouldn’t think. I would however do it if needed, assuming it’s a model I like. If it’s a non-lock model, then no thanks.
