Tang stamps and etches

#1

Post by Enactive »

I have always like tang stamps since i was a kid. To me it's a little bit like artisanal metadata. Or, liner notes if you prefer.

In any case we have been chatting a bit and showing some pics of tang stamps in Michael Scott's "Talking about your traditional knives" thread in the off topic section.

I thought i would start a "fun oriented" thread on tang stamps and etches in the main forum and spread the fun. :D

Please contribute discussion and photos of and about your favorite tang stamps. Put at least one Spydie in per post, but i'm gonna throw in a couple others too for fun. I remember some threads about variations of tang stamps/ etches from different makers and different eras, and to authenticate or identify fakes. This thread is intended to share, look at and talk about etches and stamps you like, you are curious about, you have a story about, you just want to share, etc.

I like the :spyder: Spydie bug etch :spyder: and i find steel type and manufacturing info useful. I don't generally like billboarding on the blade.

The LC200n etch on the Native 5 has grown on me-- not just because it is subtle for it's size, but it has the ability to appear light or dark relative to the bladesteel depending on the angle of your lighting.

this is tricky to photograph, but you might be able to see here. The etch will also appear pretty neutral and less definable from another angle.

Or just tell us more about stampings or lasers!?

I share your fascination wih tang engravings, although unfortunately I'm not smart enough to get the whole pic posting thing. One thing I've noticed is that sometimes engravings have a certain color cast to them, for example my M390 PM2 looks to have a kinda blueish tone to it, and my 52100 PM2 has a definite golden color (which I really enjoy.) I wonder what causes this, could it be a property of the different steels themselves, or a product of the engraving process? Also, nice knives you got there Enactive!
My collection so far: 52100 Military (2); 52100 PM2 (2); 52100 Para3; Stretch2 V-Toku; KnifeWorks M4 PM2; BentoBox M390 PM2; BentoBox S90V Military; Police4 K390; S110V PM2; SS Delica AUS-6; Wayne Goddard Sprint VG-10
Wish list: Hundred Pacer; Sliverax; Mantra; 52100 PM2 SE; Kapara

Thanks, Jon! Guilty as charged, showing off my knives. :D

I agree about the different color cast on the bug etching/engraving especially. There is that whole thread about the different bug engravings/etchings.

If anyone knows about these processes, please explain or elaborate?

But it did not work out for you?

I use imgur.com, which Vivi recommended originally, works perfectly well for me...
