Which FRN pattern do you prefer?

#1

Post by The Meat man »

Curious to see where the votes fall.

I own 5 Spyders with Bi-directional FRN (both Golden and Seki models) and 1 with Volcano (Pacific Salt.)

I think I prefer the Volcano grip. It feels a bit less harsh and plasticy (if that makes sense) while still being extremely grippy. To me it feels a bit friendlier in the hand than the Bi-directional.

What is your preference?

I voted bi-directional, but I don't have a strong preference. I like the grip on the Pac Salt just fine, although I probably like the Delica style a bit more. What I do really prefer is the seki city frn over the golden frn. Somehow it just feel softer to me. Maybe it's contouring, maybe it's better ergos for my hand, maybe it's all in my head.

The bidirectional pattern on the para 3 lightweight is also shallower than the other models with bidirectional frn.

Technically, those are still considered bidirectional patterns.

Voted bi-directional (Endura 4, Dragonfly 2, Native 5, Byrds). The extra traction is a bonus and I've never felt discomfort. My only experience with volcano texture was in a first gen Delica, and I consider the bi-directional texture a huge improvement.

Picked Volcano. It's a tie for me between volcano and "fish scale" though. Bi-directional is a bit too aggressive for my taste. It's by no means a deal breaker, but if i could choose i wouldn't choose bi-directional.

I love textured FRN generally, but WHICH exact pattern does not matter to me a whole lot...

That being said: If an otherwise exact identical knife came both in bidirectional and Volcano I´d go bidirectional.
And if the otherwise exact identical knife came both in Seki (Endura) and Taichung (Chap) bidirectional texture I´d go Taichung.
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Yeah I know there are other patterns; I just wanted it to be between the two.

This poll is too vague, to provide any worthwile data.

Fish scales and the Chap's FRN are my favorite.

Volcano. Grippy while never feeling abrasive. Feels fine IWB, while bi-directional can be a bit irritant carried that way.

Have both, but prefer bidirectional slightly more.

While each fulfills its purpose, I actually prefer the visual simplicity of G10/CF/Micarta, but not so much that I avoid FRN in whatever pattern.
