Caly 3/3.5 interest Poll

#1

Post by Tims »

To get a sprint run off the ground, a wise man once told me “keep typing”. So....

Who’s keen for a Caly 3 and or 3.5 sprint run with the following:

- Polished linen Micarta. Black, Ivory or maroon
- Nickel bolsters
- Stainless steel. Coming from Taichung, so
CTS-XHP?

My preference would be for the 3.5

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Definitely interested in the 3.5, never had one, want to try it anyway. And I really like both Micarta and XHP, so YES.
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

YES thank you, 3.5 please. Bolsters with any color polished linen micarta. XHP or other stainless is good with me. I'd buy 2 or 3 in a heartbeat (if I could get them). These would sell out the quickest. :spyder: The 3.5 is one of Sal's finest masterpieces.

Always fond of a Caly so I would say yes to both a 3 and 3.5. Not a big fan of bolsters.

I am not a huge XHP fan but it wouldn't preclude me from buying the knife.

Micarta and xhp? Yes please. I don’t think bolsters work well with this design though. Screw construction would be good though.

Agree on screw construction, particularly for the pivot, but no bolsters? Nickel bolsters are the cornerstone of this sprint! Spyderco is no stranger to bolsters.

Smaller bolsters like the lil sub hilt, less like the larger ones seen on the previous bolstered Caly. ‘Bolsterettes’ if you will.

To name a few.....

I don’t dislike all bolsters, I just don't like them on the Caly (like that first pic). Just my preference. I think they look good in that second picture. What is that, a sage? They work on the sub hilt too but that delica is not for me.

I also think the Slycz swayback would look great with bolsters, but that will probably never happen.

I might be interested in the 3.5.

Sal has said that only the FRN model will be made in Taichung with screw construction. He also said that the original model would continue being built with pinned construction in Seki City.

That would work for me as well. Love the 3.5 design. For years, my most carried Spydie.

I have a Caly 3.5 ZDP/CF and a Caly 3 HAP40 sprint. I like them both a lot but carry neither very often. Not sure why, they're great knives. I guess there's just always something else that I pick out of the pile-o-knives.

I would welcome a sprint run of either. Whether or not I actually buy it depends on what materials are used

Yup sign me up. The Caly 3.5 is perfect. Wish I would of kept mine. The Caly 3 was always too small for me. Perfect and such a simple knife, one of sals best designs EVER. Please bring me a new one!

The slimness and simplicity coupled with the ergos make me keep coming back to the Caly 3. Its not an intimidating knife for non-knife people.

Would be a hard choice for me between FRN and Micarta . My two favorite handle materials. Probably would go with Micarta, for it's much more rare in folders and I love my custom Micarta Endura.

I would say run both the 3.5 and the 3 in XHP and smooth micarta, but I would likely buy the 3 over the 3.5

*Edited to add that I would want it to have torx not pinned

Micarta would be nice though XHP isn't the steel I'd choose.
