Knife dreaming

#1

Post by Tims »

Inspired by Kingrats ‘Spyderco Retro’ thread.

Dear Sal, please design and build the following knife for me. I can’t offer much in the way of actual design, its more of a feeling, I’m confident you understand.

It should have, at a minimum, the following attributes.

-It’s the epitome of class.
-It’s luxurious self indulgence.
-It’s a knife you pull from your pocket and sit on your thigh just so you can look at it. Though, to call it pocket jewellery feels vulgar and base.
-It’s the worry stone you put your hand in your pocket for, just to feel it’s smooth, polished curves.
- It’s shiny but not gaudy
-It elicits an emotional response every time you pull it from your pocket. From yourself and others.
-Co workers instinctively know not to ask you to use this knife.
-In this modern world of lightweights, its not. Nor is it too heavy. It feels dense in the hand, a denseness that can be heard as a resonant ‘thunk’ upon locking.
-It is equally at home clipped or the in bottom of a pocket.
- 3.2”-3.5” lowish profile, drop point, SS blade of 2-3mm stock.
-healthy negative blade angle
-No choil
-Backlock
-Neutral handle shape. Not too thin.
-Bolstered. Nickel?
- Small Spyder emblem/badge sent into scale
-Polished every dang thing

That’s about all I can think of for now.

If Vishnu, lying on the cosmic waters can dream the universe into existence, surely I can manifest this sitting on my couch.

Please Sal, make my dreams come true. (for $200 USD or less) :D

This but choil. :-p
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

Honestly I want spyderco to make a manual opening (NOT auto) salt series folder with a secondary safety that locks the blade closed. So that it cant come open unless you disengage the safety. I talked about this in another thread but back when I was a beach lifeguard that would have been my perfect boardshort knife. Still would frankly. I still plan on making a thread about this later on where I can more thoroughly explain this.

Ok sal. Give me some time to get my thoughts in order so I can do a good thread on this. Might not be very soon, everything is hectic this time of year. But it is something I look forward to talking about.

The Cricket to me, was the "worry stone" type of thang!
Never owned one, but handled a few.

Slightly bigger and "melted like a bar of used soap" with a flat grind blade, and Comp Locked... :)

Hi VooDoo,

I think that as one gets older, there seems to be less and less time. I think the earth just spins faster when you age.

Understood, and true. Ill start outlining what I want to discuss. Time really is the most precious resource.

Well I got my own Fantasy Spyder Dream. Mine would be a super deluxe version of the C-60 Ayoob model. I would like one in either Carbon Fiber or a really jazzy type of G-10 for the handle scales. I would like the blade to be either M390, S110V, or M-4>> or if they would have to use a Japan Steel they could use HAP 72 or something in that league. I would also want a Titanium pocket clip and a black, coated blade or a stonewashed blade.

And the great folks at the Great Spyder Factory can take all the time they need to get it done  And if there has to be modifications I can certainly understand. ;)

No harm in dreaming mate, sounds like a fine knife and the hard works already been done.
I’ve always liked the look of the Ayoob but it was before my time.

Speaking of hard work already being done, I think the Caly 3/3.5 would fit the idea outlined in my OP. Nickel bolsters, polished black/ivory or maroon linen micarta.

Hi Tims, JD,

Either are possible and both were made by the same maker.

From across the Pacific Sal, good morning.

What’s the best way to turn ideas like these from words on a page to a knife in the pocket?

Make yourself a prototype and send sal one. But...that is obviously not as easy to do as talk about for many of us.

I would say though there are many worthy ideas. Not too long ago someone sent a design that got turned into a folder simply based on the design. Never hurts to try.

The entire "business chain" from; raw materials, invention, design, manufacturing, marketing, selling, distributing, shipping, warrantees, insurance, credit, etc. ALL EXISTS to service the ELU (End Line User).
