The Spyderco Rescue Designer? History?

#1

Post by Readi »

Hello
I'd like to hear about the Rescue.

The Spyderco Wiki has some photographs of variations of the model, though I don't see the detailed information that the other knives have.

Thankyou.

I'm pretty certain that the Spyderco RESCUE models were all "In House" designs. And I'm about 98% certain that Sal Glesser is the creator of the RESCUE models throughout the years.

My favorite is the Stainless handled RESCUE from the ATS-55 era. That Stainless RESCUE is built like an Abrams Tank  But all the RESCUE models are very functional and nice to own.

I agree, JD. I'm fairly sure I remember reading that, after the success of the FRN Delica and Endura, the Rescue was conceived as a less expensive version of the Mariner, and specifically, the "Paramedic" version of the Mariner.

Also, in addition to the ones in Reject's extensive collection, there were also Rescue versions of the SnapIt...

Hi Readi,

Welcome to our forum.

The first "Rescue" was called the Mariner. Stainless steel handles which also evolved for a while. We made a version in Gin 1 ( used for Rescue ) and we made a version in AUS-8 ( used for water activity ). We eventually dropped the name Mariner and went to Rescue. As can be seen by Reject's collection, we take the concept very seriously. ( My wife Gail was a first responder for a while, she was also a mountain climber ). It was the first production serrated knife. ( I have heard that another company made one earlier, but haven't been able to find one ).

Hey Reject,

Great display, thanx much. Do you have any of the original Stainless versions? Like the one Paul has?

Thanx for the pics Paul, When I look at pictures like the ones above, I am surprised that we made so many versions.

There is also a Manbug Salt with a rescue blade.

I need a big SS Mariner to go with my Mini Mariner.

Paul, I am so jealous of your abalone Mini Mariner!

Thank you so much REJECT for putting up those glorious, formidable, elegant Stainless RESCUE models  Recently I even had one guy on a forum say that I made that model up and that it didn't even exist  Well that picture kind of blows that one out of the water.

But it does grieve me that so few of even the most avid Spyder-Heads are not aware of the Stainless RESCUE models which are built like a solid brick outhouse :D >> The Stainless RESCUE is an Ultra-Classic in my opinion and deserves a shot at a Sprint Run IMO.

My coworker gave me her gas station knife to sharpen a couple days ago and I haven’t gotten to it yet.

Today she showed me what she was carrying as a backup for now... and it’s a SPYDERCO RESCUE. I nearly died, had to explain to her that her ‘backup knife’ is about a thousand times better than her main one.

Apparently it belonged to her ex and she had no idea it was anything special lol

The first Spyderco i ever bought was the second one down...serrated Mariner, no shackle hole...
I made a Pink Ivory scale for the mark side, glued on with 3M superglue.

I needed ready money years later and sold the Mariner on to a friend...big mistake.
Uisng acetone, I removed and kept the scale...
I will dig it out and show a pick here...

VERY nice collection Reject... :)

Very nice collections.

There was also an orange handle rescue version of UKPK. I had one but lost it.

Very impressive REJECT. You have chased down a lot of models there when it is not so easy from Australia. I also love the rescue model.

Nice collection Mini2white.
Does the green gen1 have a narrow or wide clip?
I have a narrow clip green but not the wide clip model.

You are right about collecting in Spyderco knives in Australia, it has its challengers. In my local area, I don’t think I have ever seen a Spyderco knife in a shop.

I would love to find a orange Remote Lease and a orange Snap-It like the Deacon has. They are so cool.

I would so love to have a local shop that had Spyderco knives where we could go into and try them on for size. Locals just can't compete against internet prices though.

Ditto on those remote releases. I'm lucky I use the rescues and have done for many years so I know how valuable they are.

Here are front and back photos of the white and green for you.
