Your favorite sprint/exclusive released after join-date PLUS BONUS QUESTION

#1

Post by wrdwrght »

As do many here, I have a fair number of Spydie sprints and exclusives in consequence of chasing model variants, often for steels. I have favorites.

Just for fun, what you got?

Me? 2011>Cruwear Shaman.

BONUS QUESTION! Has your impulse to chase led you to a model released before your join-date?

Me? S30V Manix (foliage-green C95)<2011.

Reminders here: http://www.spydiewiki.com/index.php?tit ... rco_C-SKUs

My compact response is: S30V Manix (foliage-green C95)<2011>Cruwear Shaman

Nothing <2014> C172CFRDTIP (Domino, Red & Black weave CF / G10 laminate; Blue Ridge Knives distributor exclusive).
I may chase an original ATR or Salsa, both with the Ti integral compression lock. But, I have a problem with chasing extremely limited runs, or now rare standard production knives. The problem is that I don't want to use and carry them, for fear of losing one and not being able to easily replace it.

Hmm...there's a lot I've liked after my join date (01/16). If I had to pick one I guess it would be the 40th Anniversary Native 5. The Cruwear Shaman is up there though.

I only have a few models that were released (and discontinued) before my join date. All were regular production items. I recently obtained the only one I really wanted...Sage 4

The one I was most excited about was the Caly jr. in laminated ZDP. It was an AFI special that sold online for right around $60 so many/most became instant users not expensive safe queens. They sold out quickly which set the standard for sprint warfare. It also brought out the good in others. One guy sold me an extra for cost while others were trying to make money to buy more knives.

It was super lightweight and very thin. If you took one now out of the box it would compare well performance wise to some much more expensive releases.

After I joined and learned about the Smurf PM2, I waited years for the 2nd release. It was worth waiting and not paying $400 on the secondary market. I instead spent that amount on buying 2 knives from the 2nd drop.

The madness of hunting down discontinued models from years before I joined led me to acquiring the Super Blue models, like all of them; minus the Mule Team. Out of the ones I didn't sell, the Caly 3.5 stands out as the best answer to the bonus question.

I've been a Spyderville citizen since my join-date of Sept 2004. Now my favorite Sprint Run to this date is the G-10 version of the C-60 Massad Ayoob model. I bought my first C-60 back in 2002 but I think the Sprint Run, G-10 version of the C-60 Ayoob was released in 2011 if my memory is still in tact.

It's probably the one I want to see return the most as well.

I really liked the CPMD2 Military. That steel took a wonderful edge with ease and held it well, and the handle color is my favorite besides black. Those came out about when I joined here. I remember I EDC'd a 440V Military at that time, and the second liner they added to the D2 Military made the handle noticeably more rigid.

I wanted one of those C95's in foliage green really bad, but found out about them well after they were sold out. Missing out on that is what made me start spending more time here.

Two months after I joined, this was my first Military and my first exclusive. It changed my perception about large folders.

I have a number of Sprints but two of the most practical are the purple Dragonfly and the K390 Urban LW.

Jade PM2 in M4 with DLC was my have to have sprint. One and only

Couldn’t be bothered with sprints anymore.

A M4 fixed blade would change that quick smart.

I am still a very "basic", down to earth and really not very knowledgable guy when it comes to steels. Generally I am totally fine with S30V, VG10, H1, HXP,don´t look for sprints in other steels (what would interest me in sprints: Handles in Micarta or wood! So if I would have gotten a "Crucarta" Shaman for example, it would have been much more for the handle, than for the steel...)

Just one exception:

HAP40 Sprints of Seki models (though those all came out BEFORE I joined the forum)!

I absolutely wanted my two favorite models in that for me perfect steel (LOVE the SUS410 cladding too), so I bought an used HAP40 Endura (could not find a new one) for a rather unreasonable high price and found a HAP40 Stretch 1 for a good one.

I also like the burnt orange scales, but in hindsight I think I should have tried to find the Pakkawood / HAP 40 version of the Endura

Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

As for the bonus question, a sizeable portion of my Spyderco collection is made up of knives released prior to my joining this forum in 2003.

Great pics. I wish Spyderco would do a sprint run of the Kiwi (lock-back version). The ergonomics and classiness of this knife are awesome!

My favorite is a toss up between the 52100 Military and the Cruwear Shaman and maybe even the S90V Yojimbo 2. I honestly don't buy a LOT of sprints like most of you, I'm pretty selective so I don't have a lot to choose from. I don't think I've really sought out any model that came before I joined, though there are certainly a few that I'd like to have, I'm kind of turned off by the idea of a knife being rare and hard to find/replace so if I'm also spending a lot of money on the secondary market to buy something that I'll be reluctant to use, that's kind of a lose lose situation for me so I tend to stick with current production models.

The all black Perrin PPT sprint run is probably my favorite Spyderco of all time, so that easily takes the spot as my favorite sprint from after my join date.

Even though it's not a sprint run, I've considered looking for an original Perrin PPT but haven't really taken the time to find one yet.

Tough decision here! Of my 17 Spyderco knives, 12 are either a sprint or exclusive. As much as I love my Manix's/Shaman and Military quickly growing on me...I'll go with the first one that really got me giddy, the BHQ Para 3 exclusive in DLC.

For the bonus question, the model was released before my join date, but not this particular exclusive model...the Heinnie Haynes exclusive UKPK. That is just a fantastic small carry knife, arguably the most comfortable model of all for my hands.

My most used and probably my favorite is a Caly 3.5 Super Blue. It met a tragic end when I broke the tip. My fault.
