Insistent First Impressions

It got my Insistent (along with a few other knives) today from the SFO, by way of UPS. Here's what I've learned in the few hours I've had it:

  • It's a chunky boy - it's thick and heavy.
  • There are no standoffs hidden in the back spacer, so that weight loss trick is a no-go.
  • The blade grind is hideous.
  • In contrast, the jimping is very nice.
  • The lanyard tube isn't peened.
  • It disassembles pretty easily.
  • Mine shipped bone dry and a little dirty.
  • Q-tips and alcohol, followed by a few drops of oil, worked wonders to smooth it out.
  • The detent is pretty strong.
  • Mine shipped with a polished stainless clip, not black as pictured on the website, but I think the polished SS looks better anyway.
  • Other than the blade spine, all the edges are nicely chamfered.

Thanks, appreciate the initial thoughts. It's smaller than I'm interested in, as the Efficient is borderline small for me. I quite like my Efficient tho and especially curious about the Emphasis.

By hideous blade grind, do you mean thick behind the edge?

I mean uneven, wavy, and inconsistent edges. There's also discoloration behind one edge that makes me think the blade got overheated during grinding.

Ouch, that should probably be a 2nd. The lack of stand-offs means its probably off my want list. Gonna be too heavy for me.

Any chance you could do some side by side shots with a few more common models?

I can do that. Sage 2, Native 5 LW, and Urban LW are probably the most common Spydies I have. I also have a CRKT Pilar and a Cold Steel Tuff Lite if you want pics of competitors in a similar size range.

They're just giving you edge angle options. 30 degrees at the tip or 90 degrees at the heel. :D
