contouring g10 scales
contouring g10 scales
Has anyone contoured the edges of their g10 scales similar to that of para3 LW / Shaman? - wondering if its a thing or should i risk it
im really liking the comfort of the LW scales but would like the extra heft of the g10
anyone?

Yes, what's the risk?

G10 dust is dangerous to breath. Make sure to use good dust control and wear a mask.

Re: contouring g10 scales
making a balls up of the scales - if they were fibrous or something and sanding off edges ruined the integrity or something like that - i dont know exactly thats whay i asked

Nothing to worry about. As mentioned watch the dust.

Re: contouring g10 scales
I've done quite a bit but it really depends on the design of the handle as to how much you can shape it. Some designs like the Para 2 have liners that extend so close to the edge of the scale that if you contour it too far you'll grind through the G10 and make a hole exposing the steel liner. Another thing to consider is you do end up with a very thin scale and that does effect ergonomics.
They sure do look nice when you can really round them off though.

In my opinion, that's how that model should have shipped from the factory. Re: contouring g10 scales
I did it on one of my PM2s. The scales are still flat, but more comfortable without the sharp edges, especially on the inside. But even on the outside.
I have been planning on doing it on couple more models, just haven't got to it yet.

Re: contouring g10 scales
That's true with just about every handle material out there. If a guy doesn't use a high rated respirator ( preferably 3M) when working around any type of dust produced from any handle material then you are asking for problems.
I've heard that carbon fiber is about the very worst. I don't even trust the dust of a lot of these exotic wood handles either.

Re: contouring g10 scales
I take the sharp edges off every knife I own, except where they're supposed to be, G10 paras included.
It makes a significant difference.

Re: contouring g10 scales
Anyone else pics of rounding off the edges? Are you all using sandpaper / grinders/ files??

Re: contouring g10 scales
I used Dremel sanding drum to take off bulk of the material. To finish it off, I clamped the scale in a vise, and used sandpaper (and water to keep the dust down) to smooth it all out.
This is getting me excited to do another one of my PM2s. This weekend. I wanted to do a Military, but a PM2 needs it more.

Nothing powered, just files and sandpaper.
Re: contouring g10 scales
Thanks everyone for the input, I figured I would try it on my least favorite scales- the smooth g10 and I can safely say I know love them! I set about trying to replicate the para3 LW and now it feels like I have wooden scales!!
