Who wants a Dodo?

#1

Post by Hopweaver »

I found Spyderco well after the last production run of the Dodo. I did hold one and the ergonomics are incredible for such a funny looking little knife. Who else would welcome a return of the Dodo as a production knife?

There is a dealer exclusive planned with BladeHQ in the near future. If you are even a little curious about this odd looking knife you should pick one up. It will probably be a tool steel like the rest of their recent Spyderco exclusives. Hoping for a stainless offering somewhere down the road too, as my personal preference is to have stainless steel on my folders and tool steel on my fixed blades.

I'm going to try and pick one up, if it was a production model, I would also purchase a couple of those.

I would hop on this latest sprint, but unfortunately M4 doesn't agree with my pocket conditions.

Yes, but only in SE. Serrations and curves just does it for me.

I’ll buy one if they do a production/sprint CF/S90V version, or if BBS or DLT do a M390 exclusive. Jade G10 and M4 do nothing for me.

I owned a few in the past and while I always appreciated the uniqueness of the design, I did not find the blade shape and size very useful. If it comes back I'll pass, but I hope for others sake it makes a return someday. I think a sprint would sell well in 2020.

I’d love to see it return, or a sprint in a stainless steel, maybe even something like BD1N to make it more affordable as I feel that would help a polarizing design like this sell. Some would take a chance on a design they feel is odd or ugly for ~$100, but for more than $150 I think a lot of people may pass who otherwise would have tried it and liked it. Especially with the size of it. I’d love to try it, but the price of the M4 BHQ one will definitely keep me from doing so.

I hope with all my hopes that I can scoop one of the BHQ ones up when they drop.

yep. i want one, but not at a crazy price just because of a steel that i don't care about. if it's overly expensive, i'd probably rather just use a box cutter. it would be awesome if there was a value run in bd1n or something along those lines. if we're not careful what we ask for though, it will come back in a lw version. it seems everything is going that way now for some reason.

I think that’s also a cost thing. G10 is cheaper to begin manufacture of a model with cause you just need to program a CNC, but that also makes the end product more expensive because of materials. Once a model proves itself in the market, it makes sense to invest in the expensive molds and bring a lower cost end product that generally sells better still due to the lower price. I love FRN because of the weight and feel, but I gotta tell you the savings aren’t bad either.

I had one of the original ones. Sold it a long time ago. It just didn’t do it for me. That said I’m not ruling out an impulse buy of the BladeHQ run.

I voted a firm YES!!! But I want a pair of them in this Sprint Run,. I want one in SE and one in PE. Nothing else will matter ;)

Oh the M-4 would be quite pleasing as well. For those of you who have never got to test drive a Spyderedged Dodo you are in for a treat

I honestly wouldn't buy it if it were for $50 in something like Rex45 :o I find it one of the most unattractive looking models they make

I'd like to get one in SE, to go with the PE one I own. Don't need any fancy steels; S30V like the original production run would be fine.

Fingers crossed I'll get one. I've had a ton of Dodos over the years but I'm down to a regular blue SE so it'd be nice to get a PE back into my collection. Handle color and blade steel don't matter too much to me at this point.

i don’t hate frn/frcp. my favorite knives are my manix 2 lw and pacific salt. i know these are strong enough to handle pretty much anything i need to use them for. however, i just don’t want to pay so much for knives that look and feel cheaper than more robust models with nicer materials. there’s a reason i keep thinking about replacing my manix with a g10 dlc version and my pacific salt with a caribbean sheepsfoot se. saving an ounce or two is not a real feature, in my opinion, especially when you sacrifice rigidity and strength to do it. they’re taking great knives and making them good to save some money while still charging almost as much. give me liners and g10. i’ll carry the extra weight.

and some of these models that are being offered in lw versions don’t make sense to me. the para 3 is a robust little knife. why make it weaker with a plastic handle? same with the little native. why? they are great with liners and g10 and hardly weigh anything to begin with. if i want a knife like the para 3 that is lighter, the delica is a great option. and the dragonfly is a great alternative to the lil native. just my two cents, i guess. i know that’s not a popular opinion around here.
