What to do with chipped corners on Sharpmaker rods?

#1

Post by Evil D »

Seems that most of my rods have developed chips in the corners. I'm not sure why, maybe I'm too careless handling them but it's insanely annoying. The flats are still fine but lately I use almost nothing but the corners on SE. Even if they're still usable with the chips they drive me nuts. The simple answer is probably to get new ones but I'm open to suggestions, ya never know.

Ascending fine grits of wet sandpaper seem to do the trick for me thus far.
It's definitely an annoyance having to deal with the chips, but you can sand them out a couple of times before having to replace them.
(haven't replaced mine yet)
Just be careful you only remove the necessary amount; you don't want to create flat spots on the stones (especially with the fine and ultra fine ones).

Have you noticed the brown rods chip more than the whites?

I’ve been blaming the Mrs for being rough with mine when she moves stuff around :o

I circle the chips with permanent marker. Having 3 sides/corners has allowed me to work around them but will have to replace them soon.

First thing that comes to mind is buying new rods. I guess you could fix them on some diamond plates, or maybe with SiC powder or sandpaper or something, but it would be tedious and be excessive wear in any stone or plate you used.

I'd be really concerned about changing the shape of the corners of the rods and that somehow effecting how they sharpen. I'll probably just get new ones and try to be extra careful with them.

Yeah, someone knocked one of my fine rods on a brick patio and it took out a chip - just replaced it when I had the chance.

I would suggest sending them in to Charlynn in customer service. . Sometimes chips are the result of microscopic cracks created in firing.
