Sharpmaker Modification

#1

Post by ZAGS09 »

Hey all -

I got a Sharpmaker and have been really liking it. I don't have the diamond or cbn rods yet so I was exploring the sandpaper trick people have used for dealing with re-profiling and really dull knives. However, I wasn't comfortable with the sandpaper not being super tight while wrapped around the rods. So I made a set of blocks that slide down over the rods that I can attach sandpaper too with double sticky tape. An added benefit is that I made them 1 1/2" wide so there is extra contact length to expedite the process. The results are pretty sweet! The sandpaper doesn't last super long but the most times I have had to change it on a knife is twice and that knife was pretty dull. I was only using 320 grit sandpaper too. I am going to try it with 220 and hopefully not have to change paper on most knives. I am sure I will get some course rods at some point but for now these are serving me well.
