Elmax

Post by daddyflea »

Recently bought a Spyderco in CPMS110V and I want a Custom knife in something that will really hold an edge butchering Hogs. I was not really all that impressed with the CPMS110V so I may get my custom in Elmax, Is this wise? I see almost no Fixed Blade Knives in Elmax.

Maybe have to amend this post my CPMS110V has not got an exceptionally sharp edge but it will shave and it has been holding it

S110V excels with a coarse edge, around 400 grit.... That would have been a better choice.

Will hold an edge pretty much forever compared to MOST other steels.

Either S110V or 10V would have been the ticket for that.

I believe there are a lot of nice kitchen/chef's knives out there in elmax. Not sure there's much in the spyderco lineup at the moment, though.

You're not going to get better edge retention from Elmax. It may have other attributes you want, but it's not in 110V's league in terms of wear resistance.

Is stain resistance one of you requirements?

Elmax will not hold an edge longer than S110V and is far less stain resistant. S110V as others have stated will work great for what you are doing with a coarser edge.

I used to go in for polished edges and having taken a Manix2 down to 15 degrees and then mirrored bevels can attest it did nothing to improve the factory edge when it came to practical cutting sure it would whittle hair but of what use is that besides making YouTube videos?

As far as I can tell the only ones who really benefit from refined edges are the wood workers.

Is your issue with S110V mainly that you can't get an edge sharp enough? That steel is quite carbidey; it may be a question of trying a new sharpening regimen, just a thought.

S110V is quite finicky in sharpening and doesn't tolerate mistakes well. You have to make sure you're getting it sharp. Anderson's advice for a 400 grit edge is good. As always, make sure you're completely eliminating the burr. It should hold high sharpness FAIRLY well (some do better than others) and once it gets dull enough that it will no longer shave hair (very close to shaving but not quite), it will hold that level of sharpness for an extremely long time.

S90V or K390 would be better for your purposes. K390 is not very corrosion resistant but it can cut.

Think of elmax as more of a high level workers steel. While the hair whittling sharpness goes away fairly fast, the working edge is where this steel truly shines.
