I'm surprised Crucible doesn't have their own rolling mill, or do they and just not roll out to desired specs?
Some large mills do have their own rolling divisions, but even they will use mills like Niagara. Making steel is a major focus. Rolling steel is also a different major focus.

How much of their operation is automated?

I once did a work project at uss posco, who makes rolls of sheer steel and they had crazy robot forklifts and stuff. Lots of acids for finishing or something. It was a pretty dangerous place to be. Imagine these facilities are similar.

Just wondering because it's common in the aluminum industry to have the melting and rolling facilities on the same property.
Sometimes, especially with new alloys, something in the casting operation can cause trouble with the rolling operation. Problems can be resolved much faster due to instant face to face communication between department personnel (without emails, travel, etc), and a common lab.

Just curious more than anything else.

Steel rolling mills is the industry where I dedicated my career. Retired now and enjoy reading about the new ideas and improvements in steel making and rolling of final product.
Most of our customers would have the steel making and hot rolling in one facility and the cold rolling or finishing in a separate building.

Bob Skibitski (Crucible) and Bob Shabala (Niagra) are great guys. I envy the time that you got to spend with them.

I have also had good experiences with both Bobs.
