I reprofiled my RJ on the Sharpmaker using the 30° setting with the CBN rods. Much less snaggy now but still not as slicey as my Delica.

That edge looks beautiful, Turbo! That is how SE should be!

That looks awesome turbo! I'm going need to invest in some diamond or cbn rods. I gave up on my reprofile with my 10 year old brown rods lol

Yeah, at this point you start running into the usual criteria that makes a blade slice well regardless of the edge type, so the thinner blade with the thinner grind is going to win. That's a great looking bevel though.

So these undulating teeth, are they just naturally produced by the corner of the rod failing to turn corners more sharply as the reprofiling is done? Or have they been sculpted by some additional means?

Also: is attempting one of these reprofiles a bad idea without diamond or CBN rods?

You'll definitely want something more aggressive than the brown Sharpmaker rods. If you don't want to spend the money on diamond or CBN rods you can always clip a strip of coarse sandpaper over your mediums or fines. I do that occasionally. It's not quite as neat but it's cheap, and probably does an even better job of rounding the teeth.

Thanks for all the kind words!

@Vivi I did this to my Pac Salt 2 too. I'll post pics when I get home later tonight.

Yes the stones smooth out the serrations during the reprofiling, no special technique needed just a lot of patience. I did this in 2 sessions and it took about 2 hours.

I personally wouldn't try it without diamonds or CBN unless you have a lot of time on your hands and would definitely break it up into multiple sessions.

BTW: do we know more or less what the angle is of the FFG on the back? On the bevel side of the teeth, it’s over 20 on my new Rockjumper, and I was wondering what the total included angle was.

Here's my Pac Salt with the same sharpening as my RJ. It's seen more use so it's not as clean looking but it still slices better than than it did with the factory grind.

@dj. I'd try and keep it as close to 0° as possible. Basically treat it as a chisel grind

I wouldn't even attempt this with only the brown rods. It might be technically possible but it already takes a good amount of time with diamond/CBN rods. It's REALLY important to remember to use a light touch if you're doing this or you WILL ruin your diamond/CBN rods. You can't expect to press harder and get there faster, you'll just rip the particles off your rods and screw them up.

Turbo's Rockjumper inspired me to pull out my Tasman Salt and give it some CBN treatment to mellow the serrations.

It's better than it was. We'll see if it's enough to notice a difference in performance. At least it's better than this freebie horror show:

I actually cringed when I saw this pic. There's probably some scenario where those are great but I'll never find it.

You have no idea how hard it was to convince our makers in Seki to make thin serrated edges.
Maybe give the Taiwan guys a shot at it? The Chaparral is begging for an SE version.

Thanks! I do wish that there was some way they could grind in the serrations to follow the curve of the blade. You'll notice the last few scallops are set at a pretty extreme angle which makes it even more prone to snagging than it otherwise might have been.

Ha ha! I knew you would find that especially painful, D! :p :D
I can't imagine any scenario where those serrations would actually be useful but I suppose you never know...

That´s what I just thought too... My SE experience and knowledge is still somewhat limited, but in what task on earth this kind of serrations could be usefull I really don´t know...

+1

This thin blade with shallow serrations must be amazing...
