Good stuff!

I love it. It’s “my” knife if you will...

It goes with me everywhere, does whatever I need it to do. It’s been with me through more stuff than anything or anyone. I don’t want to be without it... ever!

FNG here. Ordered an Advocate, Mantra 2, and Stepped Ti Chaparral. I know the chaparral was D/C last year, but I believe Blade HQ lowered the price even more to $199. Is there a way to tell whether or not the Advocate is the updated CQI version without disassembling the knife? Does it state CQI version on the box?
Welcome FNG! :) Regarding the Advocate, I'm pretty sure you can look at the bearings inside the knife and see whether they're the new style or not. I'm also pretty sure you can tell if it's CQI based on the date code on the box. I'll have to see if I can dig up a thread with that info. Otherwise I can look at the code on my box. If yours has that same date code or later it should be the CQI version.

Ok I did a little digging. I've attached a link to a picture that Kristi posted a while back that shows the visual difference between the original and CQI versions. Also, in that same thread I was reminded that when the original CQI versions were released they were in boxes with old (LP) date codes. The CQI Advocates were hitting the dealer shelves in early March 2018. I honestly don't know if there was another run since. Regardless, if the knife you receive has a date code later than March 2018 then it's likely the CQI version. Compare with the pic to confirm.

Excellent info, thanks for sharing. I haven't received the knife yet, but now I will know what to look for. Now I see why the Spyderco forum at USN is dead... everyone is over here.

It might be worth noting that KnifeCentre has both the original and the Gen2 models in stock and it seems it may be a bit of a lucky dip as to which you get. I found this out because I didn’t know how to redeem a $20 gift voucher I’d accred through past purchases. So I rang this morning.

A very helpful gentlemen named Garry assured me he’d personally handle my order to ensure I do indeed get a Gen2 knife plus the $20 discount on top of the already discounted price.
I felt a little nervous, about gen1/gen2, when I put the Advocate in the shopping cart at Knife Center because the site didn’t say anything about whether their stock was which one. I even clicked to buy, but when they wouldn’t take PayPal, I backed out.

When I went to Knives Plus and and saw that they were selling the *CQI version, even though it was fourteen dollars more, I pulled the trigger. I am nervous about it again though.
Hey sok, fourteen dollars for peace of mind is well worth it in my opinion. ;)

There's probably nothing wrong with the first lot of knives but given a choice I'll take a captive ball race over a handful of loose ball bearings and a couple of shims. :)

I’ve had an Advocate in and out of my shopping cart many times over the last eighteen months or so. The fact it’s now discontinued and the discount sealed the deal.

Yeah, I caved and ordered one of those, too (I should have blocked this forum in my browser during the discontined sales ;) ). I made a note in the instructions to make sure I get the cqi'd model, and emailed customer service to confirm that. They said they'd make sure to do that, or contact me if there aren't any left so I could cancel the order if I want to.

Can't believe they discontinued the best folder they make without revealing the replacement.
This is why I bought the last 5 SE pac salt’s that GP had in stock! Had to back up the one that’s been in my pocket for forever.
I already had 3 SE, and figured I should double that number to play it safe. This is the one Spyderco I'd never want to be without.

I disagree. If you are a collector, there is no better time to buy. A few years ago, the k2 got discontinued. They were sell for $100 I think. If you can find one now, they are like $300.
Personally I really love some of the big collaboration knives but won’t get much actual pocket time. So this is the only time that picking these up makes sense for me.

Hey Sal, I’ve been a lurker for years. So much so that I have a catalog from shot show signed by Gayle Bradley. The only thing that should have already run off is my wallet!

Sorry, I didn't mean ridiculous to be buying now! Especially for collectors or folks who love these models but can't afford them at regular prices, it makes total sense. I meant ridiculous how much money I just spent! No offense intended! :o

Not at all, I’m in the same boat. I was foolish enough to not remember this was coming and picked up a subvert days before the list came out. Yikes. It will be an expensive month.

I was torn between getting either the Advocate or the Junction from KnifeCenter. Because I waited too long, the Advocate was out of stock when I checked today. The good news is, the price of the Junction went down to $99.95, so I ordered it :)

The squarehead LW is really quite the improvement over the first model! Will we be seeing any additional color combinations?

That k2 was a steal - $150 for 4.5" of cpm 10v

That stepped titanium chaparral is calling my name - can't justify it at full price, but at $200 - I could consider it

Is sad when a collaboration model gets the axe, though - I hope there's more Gayle Bradley models to come

I held out much longer than in previous years, but the $100 Junction was too good of a deal to pass up.
