Have you had a folding knife open on accident?

Only from being dropped.

Re: Have you had a folding knife open on accident?
Back when you could still carry a knife on an airplane, the FRN Cricket I was using as a money clip opened while I was running to catch my connecting flight. I was very lucky not to get cut when I reached into my pocket for my money (but the Cricket was "cut" from my money clip lineup).
The couple of times I've had a clipped knife open in my pocket, I'm pretty sure it happened while I was drawing the knife; i.e., the knife did not spontaneously open in my pocket.
I don't think opening when dropped really counts, since external force has been applied.

BM Minigrip, two times, clipped to a pocket.
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Re: Have you had a folding knife open on accident?
Never had one open while clipped.
They have come open when dropped.
They have come open loose in my pocket carried with other items.
They have waved open on the draw when thumbstuds catch the pocket seam.
That's it.

Clipless carry (Bradley Air, once), clipped carry (Bradley Folder, once), dropped (PM2, several times). All detent-dependent models.

I had a Buck Marksman come open while clipped in my pocket. That knife having both a flipper tab and the weakest detent of any folder I've ever owned was not a good combination.

Re: Have you had a folding knife open on accident?
This happened to me a couple of times with some SOGs.
Also my PM2 has come open a couple of times clipped to front pocket.
Several knives, including backlocks have opened when dropped on hard floor.
Re: Have you had a folding knife open on accident?
I haven't had any issues with locks/detents failing, but I've had the waved Endura get accidentally deployed multiple times when the clip caught on something and it was yanked from my pocket. That's definitely...awkward.

Re: Have you had a folding knife open on accident?
I've never had a Spyderco open in pocket.
I have had a Svord Peasant knife partially open in pocket, when I EDC'd it in pre-Spyderco days. Last time I ever carried that knife, but that was down to the knife design type (pressure on the friction folder tang tab), so I don't really include that.
Sometimes when I'm lying on the couch reading, I have a folder in my hand or sitting nearby as a kind of worry stone. If I forget about it when I stand up, it will often fall about a foot and a half onto carpeted floor. If the knife is a compression lock, it will nearly always partially open.
I don't see it as a flaw, as it's never happened in my pocket. But if I drop a closed compression lock knife while standing up, I've learned to do some fancy footwork mighty quick, to get my feet right out of the way of a random bounce!

Re: Have you had a folding knife open on accident?
My one and only waved knife is the Matriarch. I've had some embarrassing moments taking it out of my pocket, intending to discreetly cut something, only to have that 'THWACK!' instant deployment and anyone standing nearby looking with dinner plate eyes at that fearsome death-claw suddenly appearing in my hand, lol!  :D
(Luckily it's been in settings where the people know me well enough not to be concerned, but it's made me exercise a fair bit of caution as to where I use it!)

Re: Have you had a folding knife open on accident?
Just once. It was a Hinderer XM-18 wharnie clipped to the waistband. Fortunately, I noticed it in time and nothing bad happened.
Re: Have you had a folding knife open on accident?
I voted no, not yet. Reason being I never carry a Spydie that is not a back lock. I carry clipped in left front pocket (Lefty). That's not to say it won't happen. I do own multiple Manix and PM models, but carry Delicas or Natives.

Re: Have you had a folding knife open on accident?
I’ve had multiple linerlocks and frame locks open for no apparent reason in my pocket and my wife has had this happen in her purse. The only lock back I’ve had open was a Buck 110 in my back pocket when the trail gave way and I tumbled down a mountain into a ravine sliding on my hind end.
I have had axis locks, flippers, and Spyerdco liner locks and comp locks open when dropped. A few times I was almost stabbed in the foot.

A para 3 sprung open when dropped on the floor. Landed flat on the handle.

Never. Perhaps because, in my 66 years of carrying a knife, I've only rarely carried anything other than slipjoints, lockbacks, and midlocks, three types of folding knives with a very strong bias to closing.

That is likely the reason. Just don’t fall down a mountain :D :D :DThe Deacon wrote: ↑Sun Sep 22, 2019 3:08 amNever. Seriously, that is a good testament to knives with a bias to close.

A lot of folks seem to judge a knife by how quickly and reliably they can flick it open and are willing to accept weak blade retention as the price for that. Still, I've occasionally wondered why Spyderco has never offered an "old school" backspring liner lock for those who prefer something with strong blade retention.
