It's fun to look at how times change in the knife world. I'm sure most are aware of how models like the Delica/Endura tips have gotten more blunt over the years. The whole tacticool attitude where a knife isn't EDC worthy unless it can stab through a car door and baton through a cinder block without taking damage has rippled through the knife world and if you look back at models from a decade or so ago you can see what life was like before that became a trend.
Just look at the splinter picker tip on this Dyad Jr.
Really will you just look at that insanity!?!? Not only is it thin blade stock but it's also a crazy swoopy clip pointy blade AND it's FFG! It's the perfect storm of fragile useless not fit for EDC nonsense. I just don't know how people coped with life back in the ancient times of 1997 when this knife first came out. I guess they just watched helplessly as the tip of their knife snapped off the first time they used it and then reground it and moved on. These knives should have been sold with a pair of safety glasses for the first use.

Re: oH tHe TiP iS ToO FrAGilE
Last weekend I visited a friend couple, I saw 2 SAKs displayed and went to "inspect" them.
Both main blades' tips were damaged and the other tools didn't show any signs of use. I asked how did they damaged the tips and the answer was "opening paint cans". I showed how the large screw driver is good for that, but the answer was "I know but..."
What can I say? Sometimes you only have a knife at hand but what is this "I know but" when the proper tool is just 2 mm apart the wrong one?

I like splinter pickers. The Pattada has a nice acute tip. The most acute tip I have seen is on the Des Horn.

I miss the old pointy tips. I get sick of regrinding them to a thinner profile. If you never pry with your knives there's very little to worry about.
Re: oH tHe TiP iS ToO FrAGilE
Personally, I like the slightly reinforced tips on the Delica 4/Endura 4. They aren’t rounded off, but add just enough support behind them. Not because I pry with my knife blades, but because I find that for many of the types of cuts I make, they seem to add a bit of extra leverage. The tips are still very sharp. A knife tip doesn’t have to be as narrow as a needle to be sharp.

I like those Endura/Endela/ Delica tips too.
On my Endela, cause is a chisel grind (SE), I even think a not slightly "dropped" tip would be in fact to fragile
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Speaking of the Endela, that’s one of the knives I want but keep putting off buying. I also see that the Police 4 lightweight has that slightly reinforced tip. I don’t own a Police 3 or 4, so it would be interesting to own a Police model with such a tip. I think I’ve really been waiting for the Police 4 lightweight.Wartstein wrote: ↑Tue Sep 17, 2019 3:07 pmJames Y wrote: ↑Tue Sep 17, 2019 12:38 pmPersonally, I like the slightly reinforced tips on the Delica 4/Endura 4. Re: oH tHe TiP iS ToO FrAGilE
I really like my pointy Police Stainless. However, given the common, frequent misuse of knives for prying, why not a main line model with a blunt pry tip like some dive knives? Call it the FUDD or Daryl or something. Maybe a version of the Delica/Endura? Or call it the Archimedes!
Re: oH tHe TiP iS ToO FrAGilE
I've broken off the tip of almost every pm2 and military I've ever owned, and I never used them for prying. All it takes is one little tap on steel and that's it. I could choose not to use my knife in any and all situations that could result in edge damage, but I'd much rather just use my knife normally. So for my uses, several models do have tips that are too fragile.
Re: oH tHe TiP iS ToO FrAGilE
Benchmade has a knife thats 56hrc 3v with a prebroken tip
Re: oH tHe TiP iS ToO FrAGilE
 Those slightly reinforced tips are plenty pointy enough. What do you actually do with a tip that thin? Not much. How many slivers do you get? I modded the tip on my Dyad Jr. I like slicey, but the Endela slices just fine at its thickness. On the other hand, I really dislike the low grind saber grinds.
- best wishes, Jazz.

:D
People like what they like. For my uses, thicker tips do nothing but reduce performance, so I will always campaign for thinner tips because they work better for me.
It's good to have options. Pelagic has uses that make thicker tips work better, I have uses that make thinner tips work better. I like us to each be able to buy what we're looking for.
FWIW I dislike saber grinds too :)
Re: oH tHe TiP iS ToO FrAGilE
I chipped the very tip off of one of my Tasman Salts (SE version) when I accidentally bumped the tip onto a glass table top while cutting something.

Being a ex butcher and known locally in the fishing - hunting community for being a decent knife sharpener.
Fixing tips is usually the #1 request to fix.
But your 100% right, knives have nowhere near the tips of 15-20 years ago.
