Spyderco Models That Deserved To Be Offered In SE

Over the years there have been some great Spyderco models that I just know in my gut would have been much bigger on the sales charts had they offered them in Spyderedge. We've talked about this before in the past but there are so many models now that didn't get teeth that it's hard for me to keep a list of them. Two models I wanted to see in SE so bad it just makes me want to scream are The Superhawk and the C-111 Captain. You could also throw in Jason Breeden's RESCUE model too for that matter. Both his models were truly meant to be in SE and I would have kept both of them for "users">> I just don't get it because I've talked to many of you who feel the same way

It's a fact that Plain Edged Hawkbills don't have nearly the usefulness that serrated/Spyderedged units have. So you would think that all Hawkbills would automatically get teeth. I've also wanted to see a good Recurve model like the Ulize, Spyker or Adventura in SE but not even considered it seems.

I'm sure a lot of you people here in Spyderville have scratched your heads wondering why certain models never got made with teeth. So let's talk about those particular models and see if we can start some momentum. I know many of you have a favorite model over the years you would have liked to try out in SE so let's list some models that most people maybe never even thought of being in SE. I still talk to old members who remember just how awesome the C-60 Ayoob was in SE>> my C-60 in SE is a holy grail in my set of "users". Which tells me that many Spyderco models with some type of curved design would have been awesome in SE. OK people put your favorite model out there that you think should have got a shot in SE

Hi Joe, I think perhaps the biggest factor stopping more people from buying and using SE knives, irrespective of blade shape is the perceived notion that they’re either very difficult or impossible to sharpen.

I for example, avoided SE knives right up until I first joined the Forum and only took the plunge to actually attempt to sharpen one a month or so ago which has opened up a whole new experience for me and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed carrying, using and sharpening my little Ladybug SE HB since and better appreciate the performance a sharp SE affords.

Once people are made aware that SE’s, Spyderco’s at least are easily enough taken to high sharpness with a simple and inexpensive little tool like the SharpMaker I’d imagine demand will rise. :)

I do agree with what you're saying BLOKE :) With the right sharpening tools serrations are really no problem as all.

But what model do you want available in SE. I'm sure you've got lots of cutting chores that you would love a Spyderedged blade for. What uses would you have for a plain edged Hawkbill?

Now do you get my point? I bet you would love a "recurve" model in SE

With my new found confidence in sharpening SE’s, I doubt I’d hesitate in buying and using any Spyderco SE pattern knife.

I can’t think of any specific model off the top of my head at the moment but I do feel the performance of a sharp SE HB has to be experienced to be believed.

I ended up with a PE HB Tasman by mistake. I meant to order a SE, but it’s still a handy knife that I use almost exclusively to clean fish. I’ve cut a little leather with it but the blades geometry is less than ideal with a tendency to bind on stiff vegetable tanned leather. :)

Ulize is top on my wish list. Seems like most of the models I'm most interested in seeing this happen with are also models that didn't really sell that well to begin with so it seems even less likely to happen.

I’m not sure it’s really necessary but I would feel obligated to buy an SE Chaparral.

I’ve tweaked my Positron enough that the last thing that bugs me is the so-so cutting performance. SE would flip that knife on its end. If I could find an inexpensive SE grinding wheel I’d probably do it myself.

I'm a big Spyderedge fan. The thing I would like to see most would be a cheap mora-esque style fixed blade in the Byrd line with a long 8"-9" fully spyderedged blade. Basically a long slim blade that used come stab into things like bags of mulch and rip through both sides of the bag in one motion.

I love the SE, but honestly I wish every knife came in combo edge. It’s really nice having a PE and when you need the SE it’s there.

I see what you're saying but I don't agree and here's why. Take the case I've just made that Hawkbill blades for instance have proven without any shred of a doubt that they are 80% better "users" in SE than they are in PE. I don't think anyone here would argue that for a nanosecond with what has been proven to us.
We've never even got to see what a top quality "recurve" blade would do in Spyderedge. But I'm fully confident that a ULIZE would have 5 times the utility uses in SE than it does in PE. But unless we can actually get Spyderco to make some of these unique designed blades a chance in SE then we'll never know for sure. What is it going to cost Spyderco just to at least try one model and the ULIZE that you and I both like would be the ideal model to do an SE Sprint version of.
Truly I believe that there are so many of these unusual designs that if they would try them in SE they wouldn't be able to keep them on the Shelves. They've certainly proven it with Hawkbills. Take the Harpy for instance>> I bet for every plain edged Harpy they've made and sold there are probably 200 SE versions out there. And it's because anyone who uses Hawkbills knows that an SE unit can do 20 to 50 as many utility cutting jobs than a plain edged unit can.
But just getting Spyderco to try at least one model out in SE is your problem. I just know that deep in my gut the ULIZE would be a mega-beast in SE.

Yeah you're right there were a lot of those more obscure models that didn't do so well on the sales charts. But give many of them a chance in SE and I do believe it will be a whole new ball game all together IMO once people get a chance to actually use them on a demanding job.

I just literally adore my old ( 2004 era) TEMPERANCE 1 model in SE and I still use it almost on a weekly basis. The TEMP 1 is one of the very few multi-purpose fixed blades that Spyderco made in SE & PE both. The TEMP 1 in SE & PE is still about my all time favorite Spyderco fixed blade they ever made. For years I would have loved to have seen a Southfork in SE or even a Sprig as far as that's concerned.

The purpose of this thread is for all of us to consider which models that Spyderco should give a chance in SE. Almost everyone I knew that owned a C-111 Captain model all agreed with me that the Captain would have been a super-blade in SE. Also Jason Breeden's other design i.e. The RESCUE would also have sold 10 times as many units in SE. Those types of knives just simply do better in SE in my personal experience.

It hasn't even been released but I hope they plan on doing a run with the Siren in SE.

Military C36 series deserves to be reintroduced in SE.
I treasure my 1990's era Military 440V in SE,,, would love to see a Cruwear or REX45 steel with SE.

FK

I would love to see the remainder of the discontinued mules SFO has left to be cut into SE! Or even if it's just the PD#1! Wonder if it would be a financial gain (or loss) to have serrations put into new old stock just to move them?

Either way I'd love to pick up a couple SE mules! Please? :D

I have wanted a run of this for a long time. I think that it would be cool to use 440V on a sprint if there is any stock that old around.

I don't think anyone here would argue that for a nanosecond with what has been proven to us.

I'm not basing this off of what I think will be a great user or what people like etc, I'm basing it off of the reality that (for example) the Ulize in particular didn't seem like a hot selling knife to begin with. Add to that the fact that SE seems to be the black sheep of the knife world these days thanks to all the social media types who dog on it and I just don't see it being a risk that Spyderco are willing to take. They're reading this forum and all the countless threads that we've made just like this one, if they thought it was financially safe I think we would already have it by now.

Maybe if it were a model that wasn't a collaboration it might be more realistic. I'm not 100% sure how Spyderco handles colab models, I'm not sure if the designer gets a royalty payment on everything sold or if they simply sell the model/design/rights outright to Spyderco. If there's money involved and/or permission from the designer, that plays a part. Maybe Johnny Knifedesigner just doesn't want to see his design in SE. This idea might be better if we push for new Spyderco designs in SE as opposed to asking for discontinued models to be brought back, especially ones that Spyderco may not fully own the rights to. The Ulize for example, there are many ways to make an ergonomic recurve, so if Spyderco can't or won't make a Ulize SE, maybe they'll make their own SE recurve model.

I'm just trying to look at this from a realistic business perspective and try to understand why Spyderco may or may not do it. Obviously I WANT this to happen and I agree that it would be awesome, but passion for the idea alone may not be enough.

I am really hoping the new Police FRN comes out eventually in SE, as well as the Siren. I think any model with long blades with shallow belly, no belly like a Wharncliffe, or hawkbill lend themselves to a serrated edge. Also any Salt model, like the Siren deserves to be available in SE.

Definitely the "regular" ffg Endura (and not just the Wharnie-version) should come in SE!!

Never thought about this myself but actually: YES! ;)
Would be interesting (and most likely amazing) to see how a spyderedge is working in 2mm (!) blade stock ffg!!

That would be very interesting, though I wonder if they'd keep the blade grind as thin as it is in PE. Even still it should slice really well. I think the only models that come close that can be found in SE are a Catcherman which is actually thinner blade stock but also hollow ground or a Dragonfly Salt which is thicker at 2.5mm and hollow ground. I don't have a Catcherman but I'd imagine it's quite a sliver, but I can vouch for the Dragonfly Salt, it's a capable little knife. I'd say it would come down to how thin they keep the Chap blade grind.

Don’t overlook the C176 stainless clipitool. It has 2mm stock with SE.
