I thought I'd contribute to this thread. I opened my new Factory Seconds P4 a few days ago to clean up the pivots since there was a gritty action when opening and closing the knife. Noticed some rusting already on the right side liners. Left side liners are clean so far.
Dang, my 2nd was spotless inside.
On my user I posted above, I sanded everything a bit with 1000 grit, then coated all the parts in mineral oil. Hope it helps.
Aw it's ok, to be honest, given how humid our climate is, I kinda expected it already... but not too soon like that

I mean, I just received it on the 24th just in time for Christmas haha. Weird though because the other liner was clean.
I scrubbed it with WD-40 and put dollops of Froglube on every metal part, liners, blade, lockbar and spring. Dried the lube and polished everything. I hope it will help keep it at bay. I'll be opening it again after a few weeks and check. If it still persists, I might try your method of patina-ing the liners.
