Manix XXL

Post by vivi »

What would you like to see in a Manix XXL? :D

Probably 0% chance one gets made, but I'm still interested to hear what people would want from one.

4.5-4.75" blade
3mm blade stock
Full flat grind OR high saber grind like the Shaman
DLC carbon steel, maybe 4V? K390?
Prominent pinky hook like the XL
CBBL, powerlock or stout C95 Manix style backlock
DLC coated liners like the Manix XL DLC
No jimping all over the handle, just on the thumb ramp and index choil.

What would you like from a probably-never-going-to-happen Manix XXL?

We had a back lock manix.
Could this be a power lock manix xxl?

I don't have anything to add to this. I think you may have just described my perfect knife. Definitely use the powerlock. Usually I'd say no to the DLC but it serves a purpose with the carbon steel.

There hasn't been a full sized backlock Manix since the C95 got cut over a decade ago.

I'd buy that. Keep thinking about getting a ridiculous large knife. Would be cool.

I would not buy this, it sounds too large for a folder.

It certainly wouldn't be for everyone, but I think it would be a big hit for those of us who like big knives.

Good to know. You didn’t say what you thought of the idea. Or do you prefer a cbbl?
I have wanting to try a power lock. Tatanka was not appealing. Chinook is tempting. Big manic would be so cool.

Powerlock Manix XXL sounds good in theory but I have not used a powerlock long term so I can't say for sure.

I have a list of knives I plan to check out when I swing by a real nice knife shop during a road trip in a few weeks, the Chinook 4 being one of them. Might end up getting one. Always liked the looks of the Chinook and the 4 made a lot of changes for the better IMO.

I’d be interested but would prefer a Military style pommel instead of a hook.

I'd really just like to see the return of the C95 Manix. Backlock and Dino Jimping. DLC 3V with peel ply G10.

Do it! I’d be in for one in every steel spyderco uses, price be damned! That said, I’m still waiting for more sprints and exclusives of the normal XL. I’m nearly at the point of taking out a loan and commissioning an exclusive just to get it to happen.
BRING ON THE MANIX XL SPRINTS AND EXCLUSIVES! And 10v or K390ify the Golden lineup, please.

Top 5 folders I’ve owned: Serrated Caribbean Leaf, Shaman, Manix XL, ZDP-189/CF Caly 3.5, Native LW.
Top 5 steels I’ve owned: LC200N, K390, CPM S90V, M390, CPM REX45.
Top 3 steels I want more of: M390 class, A11 class (including K390), CPM REX45.

At this point I genuinely wonder how much we'd have to pony up if say, five of us threw down on an XL sprint. It's utterly mind boggling how a model stays in their line-up for a decade and only gets run in two steels. So it sells well enough to not discontinue, but not well enough to sprint? Chicken and the egg? Hmmm....

have you ever tried a resilience? i realize it’s produced in china with a less sexy steel, but it’s really a great large knife and it’s at a reasonable price. if you haven’t tried on, you should.
keep your knife sharp and your focus sharper.

As long as it has a backlock, I'd be interested.

I like almost all of the specs you listed (especially the for such a huge folder rather thin blade stock), but one single spec not so much: Size.. Just TOO large for me to really seeing me carrying it.
Maybe if not in a pocket, then in a pack, but if I bring a knife in a pack (and not my pocket) in the first place most times it would be a fixed blade and not a folder...
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Honestly it really depends almost entirely on one single thing for me and that's the blade/edge profile. I didn't buy the XL because if the upswept blade and I'd pass on a bigger version for the same reason. Otherwise if the ergonomics and such are the same I'd be interested.

This model would have superb cutting ability despite being such a tank. Nice tall blade.
