Exclusive Re-runs: has this ever happened?

#1

Post by The Meat man »

We know that technically a dealer or distributor can order a second run of an exclusive, but I'm curious: has this ever been done in the past?

It seems that in actuality, exclusives are really just like Sprint Runs - once they're gone they're gone for good. Has there ever been an exception to this?

Bento Box Shop has at least three with PM2 M390 dark blue G-10
Knife Works with PM2 CTS 204P with green G-10
DLT has done a few.
Probably several others.

Bento Box and DLT have both reissued dealer exclusives. Really not sure about distributor or other dealer exclusives.

As mentioned, it has definitely been done before. I assume it depends on whether the dealer is willing to take a risk on not selling out a 2nd or 3rd run due to hype dying down by the time it can be produced. KnifeWorks for example has had a couple exclusives that they sat on for a very long time and had to eventually end up discounting, so I'm sure that makes them hesitant to re-run something as opposed to trying something new that they feel is a sure thing to sell out.

Depending how much you want to spend, I think Country Knives still has one. I handled it awhile back when I was in their store.

They’re pretty proud of their stock, aren’t they? Last I checked they also had the orange wharnie urban too.

Hey guys, yeah it's a great one, very much a workhorse! I was very pleased with the performance of M4; it takes a nice edge without much effort and holds that edge for a good long while. Makes for a good "no worries all day heavy use" folder. And of course the fit and finish is superb, and PPCF is probably my favorite scale material. I'm not too keen on the jade/natural G-10; I'm happy it exists for those who like it, I'm just not one of those.

I suppose it's possible KnifeWorks could recommission this one, but it sold somewhat slowly-ish, so that's a factor. It would be interesting to learn about the dynamics of exclusive reruns, especially given that the exclusive "pipeline" seems to take about a year from concept to release (someone correct me if I'm wrong on that), and that Spyderco's production capacity is not limitless.

Agreed on the “jade” g10. I swapped plain black oem scales onto my bhq para3. Love M4. I’m edcing rex45 now, may find I like it as well or better?
