The only time i've come close to being injured due to a lock was when my Para 3 LW partially opened in my pocket on numerous occasions. No lock is perfect, ESPECIALLY a comp lock. I carry FRN backlocks most of the time these days.

Call me old-fashioned if you will but I still prefer the back lock. I think it’s a lot safer.

the bias to close would've put me in more danger in this case, but my thumb wouldn’t have been there with a backlock, so there’s that. seriously, it felt like the knife snapped closed on me. fortunately, it wasn’t a bad cut. it just wouldn’t stop bleeding.

Wow, the para 3 has a fairly lightweight blade too. Was the detent on the weaker side for that knife? I never had that issue with my pm2's, but I also carried them tip down.

there's a lot to be said for keeping your digits out of the path of the closing blade. Comp lock is great for that.

Just like with guns, the only real safety is trigger discipline. I don't put my trust in a lock, I just be careful. It's working pretty good so far. I've had a couple minor incidents but they were my fault and easy to learn from.

Comp lock is far safer than a liner or frame lock. But as David said, no lock should be trusted totally. I’ve seen fixed blades fail and cut people, so any knife that folds is suspect.

It was weird because I couldn't shake it open or really even gravity wrist flick it open. I'm guessing the fabric of my shorts would press into the lock tab while.I was sitting down or walking and disengage to where the blade opened a bit. I'm waiting for the first Para 3 LW exclusive to see if it was the knife or if that design/lock just isn't great for the way I carry.

Not that I’m blaming you or the lock specifically, but did you check the knife afterwards? I had a really old uncle Henry liner lock that failed due to wear on the lock face a few years back. The bar had worn down enough to not fully engage.

It was nearly new. I sold it and disclosed the fact that it did this to the buyer. I'll try again with the next Para 3 LW release. It was a great knife other than that...well, and the smoother than usual FRN was disappointing as well if I'm being picky.

Ouch. The one time I've really gotten into my thumb was my first and last experience with an assisted opener. Didn't know it was assisted, started slowly thumbing it open and pow, thumbnail to the bone. Bled all over the counter at the retail shop...and the knife.

First let me say: “I love the compression lock on my left handed PM2. I can open/close the blade with my left hand alone. My fingers are never in the path of the sharp part. The friction of the lock bar holds the blade closed. This is all good. However, I too suffered a bad cut from another brand knife with a liner lock. Why? Because the knife was set up for tip up carry. And, being left handed, the blade was toward the open side of my pocket.

Second, when you have a problem, three words come into play: Improvise, Adapt, Overcome! For ME, if I have to carry a liner lock, it is in a pouch. My compression lock PM2 is carried tip down. That knife has been carried that way, every day, for over 2 years with out issue. Spyderco put little holes in the scales so I could move the pocket clip for safe carry. Failure is not an option!

this was 100% my fault and not the fault of the lock. i’ve used liner locks and frame locks for years without issue. this cut was avoidable. i was fidgeting carelessly with my knife and closed it on my thumb. that said, i fidget like this all the time and just slipped up. if i had been doing the same thing with a knife that has a compression lock, my thumb would’ve been safe.

Yikes!! I hope what is under that bandage is not too serious. A good reminder to all of us to be careful with these sharp things.

My only real cut was with a ZT. I am pretty sure a Spyderco will never hurt me.

That case was a frame lock knife -- with a spring assisted opening. Carried tip up. The real mistake was not carrying it at the back of my pocket where the blade would open against the seam (as I usually do). There was some reason it was at the front of my pocket.

Anyway, I was pushing my hand into my pocket and wondering, "hey, ow!, what the heck is going on?" Funny how I don't carry that knife so much any more. It did take some medical tape to hold the cut closed and healed nicely and I really can't identify the scar among all the other divots on my thumb.

My only really spydie bite was pretty recently, after I'd just gotten a used manix back lock. I've never had a back lock knife with a handle so long, and so I didn't quite have my index finger high enough on the handle when I popped the blade forward...whoops. But it was nice to find out that the previous owner sent it to me nice and sharp!
