So about that "red" Loctite...

Post by Evil D »

It doesn't matter what color the thread locker is if you drown the flippin screw in it.

I've been pretty supportive of the thread locker ordeal, but this is too much even for me. I don't mean to brag but I've only had one major issue with getting a screw loose and today after nearly 15 years with the brand I finally stripped my first screw. Having had such success in the past, even with the actual red loctite, I feel pretty confident in saying this is beyond excessive.

Here are a couple scale screws....

Which I thought was unusual because the display side pivot screw had none at all....

But then when I went to take out the back side pivot screw it took everything I had to turn this screw and then this mess came out....

So I got curious and tried to remove the back side pivot screw on my other Caribbean and it instantly stripped. I'm pretty confident my technique and tools and such are adequate (given that I removed that ridiculously glued in screw in the previous pic) but this screw just gave up almost instantly.

I love the folks in Taichung but whoever is in charge of the thread locker needs to dial it back a few notches. Looks like I'm sending this Caribbean to Golden to get the screw pulled out, partly so they can see how much crap is on the threads for themselves. This stuff may be white but it feels every bit as strong as the red, especially when excessively applied.

Yeah, that's rough. I don't do much disassembly, but do reposition most of my clips for left hand carry. The clip screw on my Sliverax had copious amounts of loctite like that. A soldering iron saved me from stripping the screw entirely before I got it out, but it's still mangled.

Old pic from the Sliverax thread:

Yep that's a bit much! I've had a couple that I thought had too much (it only takes tiny little dot) but yours wins the way too glued award.

If Evil D stripped the screw, anyone would have. That thing's loaded. All you need is about 1 tenth of a drop. Probably less.

That is excessive, for sure. They put the new guy on the thread locker line.

I haven't had a problem with my Spydies, but my new civivi baklash pivot screw was almost welded in there! I got it without heat or anything but the crack it made when it broke loose was crazy! All good now, but why? Just a dab will do ya!

That clear/white thread locker out of Taichung is no joke. I buggered up a screw on my K2 because of it.

That does look excessive. That's a bummer about the stripped screw David!

It's not just Taichung. I had some initial issues removing the pocket clip from my Wharncliffe Dragonfly because there was so much thread locker on the screw.
