coated lc200n?

#1

Post by ladybug93 »

i understand that some people hate coated blades. i also understand some people like coated blades for stain resistance, which is unnecessary for lc200n. however, there are some that prefer coated blades for discretion (i’m one of them). will we ever see any lc200n models with dlc or other coatings? i love my all black pacific salt and there are a few other spyderco models i hope get run in lc, but i’d also like to see them coated. even a coated caribbean would be more compelling. thanks.

also, i forgot to mention that it seems like lc200n holds on to oils and prints up like crazy. it’s not a big deal, but i’m constantly wiping my native salt off and cleaning it because it doesn’t look clean. a coating would make it look nicer in my opinion.

The Never Summer Native LW exclusive was a DLC coated LC200N blade, so the question really is when are we going to see more?? :D

I am very excited at the rumors of Toxic Green FRN being paired with some/all of the upcoming LC200N Salt models, and having some DLC coated variations paired with the Toxic Green would surely drive sales into the next stratosphere! I also would LOVE a blacked out DLC LC200N Dragonfly Salt. Have been asking for that one for awhile. And some blacked out Native Salts would be nice as well.

Discretion? Nothing draws attention like a black blade.

If you’re referring to stealthiness in the dark... unless you’re a SEAL I think you can get by with regular LC200N.

i like green better than yellow, but i hate “toxic green” because of its association with zombies. the whole zombie thing really irritates me. at this point though, i don’t care. i’ll just due it black and have an all black salt in lc200n.

i disagree. a black blade doesn’t catch the eye like a shiny blade does. once noticed, it might appear more “murdery” but it’s not as readily noticeable.

and as far as stealthiness goes, maybe i do need it. maybe a lot of people do. maybe nobody does. it really doesn’t matter at all. what is the last spyderco knife you purchased because you absolutely needed it? what matters is there is clearly a market for coated knives.

I would love to see the Native 5 Salt and Caribbean both in dlc and combo edge while they are at it.

I think an easy to find if dropped fluro green (like the yellow FRN salt knives) would be better than "toxic green". I might be interested in a military or Shaman with a coated blade but have little interest in anything else.

I like the aesthetic of a black coated blade in combination with some handle colors. Lack of availability of black coated blades hasn't deterred any purchases for me, but I can understand how it could motivate additional purchases for some folks.

So do you think yours is a true "Salt" knife or is it just a regular Native LW with an LC200N blade? Have you had any corrosion on any of the hardware?

I use it on food and leave it dirty quite a bit with no issue. I don't dry it after I rinse it off. The hardware is all dlc though, so hard to say. Practically speaking, it seems that way.

Valid points ladybug. Another issue is modification of your blade. If the model has a very acute tip (why hello, Native Chief) that could snap off, you'd be killing the knife's appearance by grinding down the spine to fix the tip, stripping off part of the coating. In those cases I prefer uncoated, unless it's something like Maxamet (some models anyway), solely because I want the edge retention and corrosion resistance so badly I'd probably want the DLC. My preference totally depends on the model and how I plan on using it.
