Best Spydie for kayaking and canoeing...

Postby SC_PATRIOT » Fri Jul 26, 2019 8:20 pm

I have a couple of Caribbeans that are both serrated. Does anyone use anything smaller (i. e. Native salt), for general purpose canoeing. Freshwater only.

For kayaking, I will usually just carry a SE Salt 1 clipped in waist band.

I actually spoke to someone at Spyderco last time I was there who mentioned keeping a Snap-It Salt hung onto the front of his PFD while kayaking. Sounded like a good idea to me.

I keep an Atlantic salt se on my pfd and often a Salt 2 se in my pocket. I never use the Atlantic, it's there for emergencies only.

Just bought a Native Salt PE and it will probably replace or compliment the Salt 2.

Enuff Salt gets my vote, too.

I would most definitely want a nitrogen based blade steel like something out of the H-1 Salt Series. A TUSK model would make sense for that type of activity. And it has a nitrogen based blade steel LC200N.
I'm still holding out hope for a Salt Series Dyad, double bladed model.

Canoeing and kayaking in fresh water (all I do) I carry a native salt PE and usually a dragonfly salt PE. Hoping to add a SE salt at some point, too.

Salt water paddle board for me. Mine’s inflatable and after patching that hole, decided inflatables and knives don’t mix. :D

I never really did white water kayaking, just "sea"-kayaking on lakes.
Honestly, like in any other fresh- (as opposed to salt-) water scenarios, I never had rust problems on VG10 blades whatsoever. So I just carried an Endura 4 or my CE Delica. Now that I have an SE Endela, I guess that will become my kayaking knife.
Top three going by pocket-time: Endura 4 in VG 10/Micarta-scales; Stretch 1 in VG 10; Endura 4 in HAP 40

He must carry IWB.

SC_PATRIOT. In freshwater you could carry just about what ever you want.
As for Natives, I’ve carried a Native LW on the water, the salt version would be perfect

Yup, just like that. But it says jimmy Lewis on the side and is maybe a little longer. And faster.

if i was going to keep a knife on a pfd for emergencies, it would probably be the assist salt or the sheepsfoot enuff. then i’d also have something else in my waistband... probably a pe native salt since my emergency knife is already a se sheepsfoot.

Haven't used them this way yet but I plan on clipping a Spyderhawk to pfd and my Tusk at my waist in the future

Does that complexity decrease the simplicity? Not at all.
