I'm open to steel suggestions for a regular production Millie 2.

As much as I would love to see a new lock type like the Stop Lock I also try to keep in mind the intended use for this knife and I think a lock that features an open back construction is still the best idea.


That said, I could have swore I just read recently that Pacific Salts are issued to some branch of the military, so if they're getting by with a back lock maybe a Stop Lock would work, but part of why the Pacific works is likely because it's rust proof so if it does fill with crud it's not a big deal. I guess those of you who are just dying for a back lock style Military may just have to settle for the Police 4.

I think you should make both the Police and Military standard production models full on Salt models in LC200N. If not the standard version then at least variants. LC has been great for me and it would be a great steel for a serviceman who doesn't have time to worry about corrosion.

Although it is not my favorite, I can't see where the company would go wrong with using 204P or 20CP. Essentially M390 performance at domestic cost. I reckon that would keep many average users happy. Now, for complete lunatics like me, they've got waaay too much chromium lol.

Sal, I think that the market is saturated with S30V. In a knife at this price point, I think a higher end steel, or a different base stainless steel, would help sales tremendously. A change in handle material and/or color as standard might help too. I think the Shaman sprint run demand has shown this. How many black G10 handle, S30V blade knives will an afi buy?

I do agree with this. And my vote is Cruwear (or PD1) as a well rounded steel that is very stain resistant, tough, and easy to sharpen, with edge holding on par with S30V. 3V with the Delta heat treat or equivalent would also be good as it is also very near stainless with excellent toughness and edge holding. OD Green or Denim Micarta scales would also be amazing if the design allows. Or at the very least maybe foliage green peel ply G10 or OD Green G10 maybe?

Sal, I try not to look at gift horses the wrong way, not least because I love the comp lock, but has the stop lock proven inappropriate for the Millie?

We're still playing with stop locks as well. Eric wants to bring out new locks each year. We have a few not used much or at all yet.

Don´t want to take the words out of Vivis mouth, but as far as I understand this thread was started genuinly to ask, what happened to a stop lock Military that was already designed around 2005 and of which there were already plans to put it into production.

Remains an interesting question...

With my corrosive sweat, a highly stainless steel is a must for me. But, the afi market seems to like those exotic carbon steels. I think a flat / earth tone green, brown, or tan G10 alone would go a long way on sales. Maybe use the new S45VN as the base blade steel, even though it's probably only slightly better than S30V. I think S45VN with earth tone G10 scales would be superficially different enough to significantly spur sales.

I'm no steel nerd yet, but considering the speed at which the Cru-Carta Shaman sold, I doubt you'd be left with a lot of Cru-Wear Millies, even with regular G-10 handles

Yeah i agree, LC200N is great for this. No maintenance issues, super easy to sharpen and it takes a killer edge!
I'd also love to see this steel on the Para3/PM2 as a salt version. To be honest i wouldn't mind to see all S30V replaced with LC200N.

If we skip corrosion resistance i'd say S390, K390, Maxamet or something in that ball park that we can push to some high HRC.

This combined with LC200N could possibly dethrone my Caribbean!

I'm definitely not opposed to a Military 2 Salt in LC200N. One in Micarta handles would be stellar as Micarta's grippiness increases when wet.

I don’t know what would be easiest to get and what would be the most realistic price wise, but I think that Cruwear or 20CV would be great choices. Both powdered steels, both American, both in vogue. I’m not sure how the timeline would work, but even S45VN would be awesome in the debut.

I think a tough steel is best for the military’s fine tip and thin geometry. I would love to see a debut in cruwear, or d2.

How much of a price difference would there be between an S30V Military 2 and a BD1N Military 2?

I think having a BD1N/VG10 level baseline model makes a lot of sense given how many sprints happen. Most users are well served with steels like that, and people that turn their nose up at them are going to hold out for sprints anyways.

Sal, I can't tell you how happy this makes me. I've been a Spyderco enthusiast for the better part of 10 years now and I've wanted a compression lock Military since the beginning.

I feel like S30V would make the most sense for the base models, to fit right in with the PM2 and Para 3.

I'm also a big fan of the Ranger Green K390 exclusives. ;-)
